It’s been three years since Josh Duggar was arrested for possessing child pornography.

The former 19 Kids and Counting star was first accused of downloading “child sexual abuse material” in May 2019 as a result of an investigation by Homeland Security Investigators (HSI).

The investigation came years after he was accused of molesting five girls, including two of his sisters, when he was a teenager. Later in 2015, he admitted to cheating on his wife Anna and to having an "addiction" to internet pornography.

Following his arrest in April 2021, Duggar was found guilty in December 2021 of two charges of knowingly receiving and possessing child pornography and sentenced the following year in May 2022.

When was Josh Duggar arrested?

In 2019, Homeland Security Investigators (HSI) began investigating Duggar. According to a news release from federal prosecutors that May, Duggar "allegedly used the internet to download child sexual abuse material … [he] allegedly possessed this material, some of which depicts the sexual abuse of children under the age of 12, in May 2019."

In November 2019, agents with Homeland Security visited the car dealership where Josh was working as part of an investigation. That same month, Duggar and his wife Anna welcomed their sixth child.

Duggar was arrested on April 29, 2021, just a few days after his wife Anna announced she was pregnant with their seventh child. Following his arrest, he was held without bond in an Arkansas jail.

The following day, he appeared at the hearing at the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Arkansas via Zoom, where he was charged with receiving and possessing child pornography. During his court appearance, he pleaded not guilty to the two charges against him: one count of receipt of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography.

What was Josh Duggar’s sentence?

On Nov. 30, 2021, Duggar’s trial began in a federal courtroom in Fayetteville, Arkansas. A verdict was reached on Dec. 9, 2021, when a jury found Duggar guilty of two charges of knowingly receiving and possessing child pornography, also known as child sexual abuse material.

His sentencing came five months later in May 2022: He received a sentence of more than 12 years in federal prison and was ordered to pay fines and special assessments of $50,100.

Duggar’s legal team later appealed his conviction to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, however, the appeal was rejected in late 2023.

Where is Josh Duggar now?

Duggar is currently serving his sentence at FCI Seagoville federal prison in Texas. He was originally due to be released in August 2032, but his sentence was extended by nearly two months in May 2023 due to a contraband cell phone, USA Today reported.

As a result, his release date is set to be sometime in October 2032.

What has Josh Duggar's family said about him?

Though several members of Duggar's family stood by him amid the controversy, others have spoken out against him. His sister Jill Duggar Dillard — who was one of his multiple alleged molestation victims alongside sister Jessa Duggar Seewald — told PEOPLE in September 2023 that she still harbors anger toward him. Sister Jinger has said she doesn't think her elder brother is "truly changed" since receiving sentencing — a sentence their brother Jason called "fair."

His cousin Amy Duggar King has also spoken out against him, telling PEOPLE she doesn't believe he's capable of changing his past ways while serving his prison sentence. Though she doesn't "really know" what she hopes Josh gets out of his time behind bars, she added: "I want him to stay as long as he can because he can't hurt children. He can't view that disgustingness and his kids hopefully are safe as well."
