Why do people get tattoos on Friday the 13th?

People get Friday the 13th tattoos as a symbol of good luck, contrary to the date’s otherwise superstitious connotation. Tattoo parlors began offering Friday the 13th tattoos as a good luck symbol because of a tale passed down about a sailor who had the number 13 tattooed on himself so bad luck would pass over him, according to CBS News.

The trend allegedly began in Texas in the mid-90s. It eventually picked up steam and has now become a quasi-holiday.

When was the last Friday the 13th in October?

Believe it or not, there’s not super rare about Friday the 13th landing in October. Friday the 13th has happened in October three times in the past 22 years: 2000, 2006 and 2017.

What is the origin of Friday the 13th?

It's hard to know the exact origin of the day and when it became thought of as unlucky, but historians say it could stem from Christianity.

In the Bible, Judas Iscariot – the disciple who betrayed Jesus Christ – was the 13th guest at the Last Supper. Also in the Bible, many unfortunate things happened on Fridays including Christ's crucifixion. The day has since been associated with a "general ill omen," said Michael Bailey, a history professor at Iowa State University who specializes in the origins of superstitions.

Another account suggests that the day has been associated with misfortune since 1307 when on a Friday the 13th, the French king gave the orders to arrest hundreds of Knights Templar in France. Most of them were executed.
