Where to celebrate Feast of the Seven Fishes before and on Christmas Eve in Delaware

I haven't seen as many restaurants this year as I used to that are offering Feast of the Seven Fishes dinners.

The Italian-American feast, also known as Cena della Vigilia, or Christmas Eve dinner, calls for eating seven different kinds of seafood.

Why seven? No one has ever really answered this question for me, though conventional wisdom is that the number relates to the seven sacraments or the seven days of the week. It's also part of the longtime Catholic practice of feasting on seafood the night before Christmas.

  • Ciro Food & Drink at the Wilmington Riverfront is offering an $85 per person seafood feast from Thursday, Dec. 21, to Saturday, Dec. 23. For reservations, call 302-543-6071.

  • The Quoin Hotel, 519 N. Market St. in downtown Wilmington, has a classic Italian feast of the 7 fishes at 4, 4:30, 5 and 5:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The cost is $85 per person, and $35 for family members under 12 years old (prix fixe menu, gratuity not included).

  • Drift in Rehoboth Beach has its Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve. They have two seatings, one at 3:30 p.m. and another at 6 p.m. Book now on Open Table under Special Experiences. It’s $125 per person or call 302-567-2744.

  • Mrs. Robino's on Union Street in Wilmington usually has a menu featuring Feast of Seven Fishes meals on Christmas Eve. Reservations are highly recommended.
