What's leaving Netflix in February 2020: The Matrix, Gangs of New York, more
February brings with it this year’s Oscars ceremony and an early cap to awards season, but it also marks the monthly churn of content over at Netflix. On Tuesday, the streaming service revealed which titles will be leaving next month, and some of them could make for good viewing before or after the Oscars.
Martin Scorsese is nominated for Best Director for his new Netflix film The Irishman, and as a result, many of his past films have been streaming on the site as well. But next month his 2002 film Gangs of New York departs Netflix. Though set a full century earlier than The Irishman, Gangs of New York touches on familiar Scorsese themes like the American immigrant experience (especially for the Irish in this case) and also features Daniel Day-Lewis throwing a knife at a portrait of Abraham Lincoln — a role the actor would later win an Oscar for playing in Steven Spielberg’s 2012 film Lincoln, which will also be leaving Netflix next month.
In other Oscar news, Sam Mendes is a strong contender in the Best Director category this year thanks to his work on 1917. He already won the award once for his 1999 debut American Beauty, which is also set to leave Netflix soon.
