What's happening at the Redding Rodeo on Tuesday

You can saddle up and ride on out to Redding Rodeo week events starting Tuesday.

Celebrations open before the actual rodeo gets going at the Redding Civic Auditorium later this week.

Start your Tuesday on the hunt for some loot "stolen" by ever-elusive thieves Lone Stranger and Sidekick during the Asphalt Cowboys' annual staged mock bank robbery.

Word from the philanthropic cowboys' group is that the masked pretend criminals were spotted somewhere in Redding on Tuesday morning as they were heading to pull off their heist at an unidentified North State bank branch.

Just follow the clues to figure out the identities of the two well-known community figures hidden behind those desperadoes' masks.

The Lone Stranger and Sidekick leave in their getaway car after the mock robbery at Plumas Bank on Hilltop Drive on Tuesday morning, May 17, 2022. The pretend robbery was staged as usual by the yellow-shirted Asphalt Cowboys as part of Redding Rodeo Week. Check the daily clues to identify the Lone Stranger and Sidekick and find the loot.

The Asphalt Cowboys always make sure the disguised Shasta County celebrities make a clean escape, despite making a show of chasing them with guns loaded, blanks blazing.

After the heist, go right to Redding.com to find clues leading to the Lone Stranger's and Sidekick's identities and where they stashed their ill-gotten loot. Figure out the right answer and walk away with cash prizes. We'll also post contest rules and tips from past winners on Redding.com.

The Record Searchlight will post clues daily through Friday, or until someone wins by finding the loot or correctly puzzling out the identities of the men or women behind the masks.

'Go Western.' Businesses compete for best rodeo decor

Don't be surprised if you see hay bales in your bank's lobby and tellers dressed in calico and bolo ties.

Also on Tuesday, Shasta County businesses compete in the Asphalt Cowboys Decoration and Costume Competition.

Winners are the businesses judges think best exhibit this year's rodeo theme, Neon Lights and Rodeo Nights, according contest planners.

Staff costume up and decorate their businesses to compete in three categories: Financial and lending institutions, medical facilities and a third category of other businesses. The judges award points for originality, decorations and props, costumes, use of a theme and the effort staff made, according to the Asphalt Cowboys.
