‘Whatcha Packin’ for ‘Drag Race 16’ episode 12: Dawn feels the earth shake with Michelle Visage

Each week on “Whatcha Packin’,” Michelle Visage interviews the recently eliminated queen and shows us some of the runway looks they didn’t get the chance to use on the show. Following her episode 12 elimination, Dawn stopped by to chat with Michelle before they were rudely interrupted by an L.A. earthquake. Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.

In her interview with Michelle, describes “the birth of Dawn” as being introduced to “Drag Race” during season 9 on the episode that Valentina wouldn’t take her mask off. From there she was enthralled with the queens and started “playing with makeup” before creating Dawn. She also says she was swayed away from studying fine arts in college in order to “pay the bills” with a computer science degree. The fine arts did help inform the way she paints her face in drag though. On the show, Dawn said that she was “in a funk” over the way she always painted her face the same and Michelle’s advice to try something else helped and still helps her do things a little bit differently (and better).

Though it was the challenge that sent her home, Dawn really enjoyed the silliness of the “Bathroom Hunties” day because all the queens got to have fun with each other on set. In terms of her garments for the runway, Dawn says that she designs everything she wears and because she is used to making everything herself it was “horrifying” to hand her designs over to the other creators to help her make outfits for the show. She thanked Michelle for the validation she gave her sense of style on the runway because she wasn’t sure how her looks would translate on the show.
