What to Stream: 3 Vice Presidential Movies

In honor of the vice presidential debate between Democratic candidate Tim Kaine and Republican candidate Mike Pence, we thought we’d celebrate the best movies having to do with the most powerful No. 2s in the land. It would appear that fiction has followed reality’s lead and has mostly ignored movies about (or featuring) vice presidents — or potential ones — but we have three strong contenders you can stream right now.

All the Way

One would be hard-pressed to name all the vice presidents in U.S. history, but at least one of them became famous through tragic circumstances. Lyndon B. Johnson succeeded John F. Kennedy in 1963 after Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. In an acclaimed TV movie from HBO, Bryan Cranston stars as LBJ in his first year after JFK’s death, working with Anthony Mackie as Martin Luther King Jr. in an effort to pass the Civil Rights Act. All the Way is available to stream on HBO Go.

Game Change

Also from HBO, our next choice is about a woman who might have become the first female veep, Sarah Palin. Julianne Moore stars as Palin, as she goes from relatively obscure governor of Alaska to a suddenly famous vice presidential candidate sharing the 2008 GOP ticket with John McCain, played by Ed Harris. Moore won a Golden Globe for best actress, and Harris came away a winner too, for best supporting actor. Game Change is available to stream on HBO Go.

An Inconvenient Truth

And finally, why not a movie that doesn’t feature a portrayal of a real vice president but rather the real deal? After losing the 2000 election to George W. Bush, Al Gore wowed audiences with this 2006 film about a subject he cares deeply about — climate change. Featuring Gore, the film helped raise awareness about the issue and won an Oscar for best documentary. An Inconvenient Truth is available to stream on Hulu.
