What to Stream: 3 Halloween Movies That Aren't Too Scary
We’re getting closer to Halloween and we can’t wait! Last week we shared Halloween movies that the whole family could enjoy together. This week we have different titles that definitely aren’t for kids, but aren’t too extreme that only horror fans would enjoy them. Here are three good scary but not too scary movies you can stream right now.
Poltergeist
In 1982, Steven Spielberg was under contract while directing E.T. and thus wasn’t allowed to direct any other films simultaneously. Instead he had to settle for just writing and producing this Oscar-nominated film. Starring a younger Craig T. Nelson, the film features a family in California that has its home invaded by ghosts that abduct the daughter. Poltergeist is free to stream with a subscription to HBO Go
The Haunting
You could watch the remake of this 1963 classic, but … that would be silly. Sorry Catherine Zeta-Jones. This horror film was based on a book by Shirley Jackson, who is best known for her harrowing short story, The Lottery. In it, a group of people check out a haunted house and start to lose their minds. Though it opened to little box office success and lukewarm critical reception, it’s now a cult classic and is a favorite of Spielberg and Martin Scorsese. The Haunting is available to rent on Amazon.
The Wailing
And finally, how about a contemporary pick? 2016 saw a little-known yet very good movie come from Korean director Na Hong-jin. The films is set in a small South Korean town, where a mysterious stranger shows up at the same time that many residents start exhibiting bizarre and violent behaviors. A police officer sets out to investigate after his daughter shows those symptoms. The Wailing is available to rent on iTunes.
