What to Stream: Escape This Brutal Campaign Season With These Presidential Comedies

While we might be entering the homestretch of this presidential campaign, it feels like it’s never going to end. So it might be good to ignore the realities of Washington for a few hours. Why not stream these three presidential comedies instead and have a few good chuckles?

Our first film came out in 1993 and involves a massive conspiracy to keep the American people from knowing the truth. But in a fun way! When President Bill Mitchell goes into a coma, his senior staff hires his dopplegänger to fill in. Featuring a stellar cast of Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver, Frank Langella, Ben Kingsley, Laura Linney, and Charles Grodin, this comedy earned an Oscar nomination for Gary Ross’s original screenplay. Dave is available to rent on YouTube.

Hollywood icons Jack Lemmon and James Garner joined efforts for this comedy in 1996. Two former presidents who were bitter rivals must rely on each other to survive an assassination plot. Also starring Dan Aykroyd, Lauren Bacall, and Wilford Brimley, this movie has both laughs and suspense. My Fellow Americans is available to rent on Amazon.

And then finally, we have one of Aaron Sorkin’s earlier works. Before he would bring the White House to television, the Academy Award-winning writer told the story of a president who falls in love with a lobbyist. Starring Michael Douglas, Annette Bening, Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox, and Richard Dreyfuss, this film was named one the greatest American love stories by the American Film Institute. The American President is available to rent on iTunes.
