We’ve Got Movie Sign! ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000’ Goes Back Into Production

After a 17-year hiatus and one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns of all time, Mystery Science Theater 3000 is back in production! The show’s official Twitter account announced the news with a picture of the cast and crew, which features some familiar faces and a few new to the series.

MST3K, as it’s known by SuperFans, or MSTies as they call themselves, began as a public access program on Minneapolis’s KTMA in 1988. It was a passion project for local comedian Joel Hodgson, to roast awful B-movies with a pair of handmade robot puppets. The show was quickly snapped up by the nascent Comedy Channel, soon to become Comedy Central, where it lived for six seasons, before a cancellation and a jump to The Sci-Fi Channel for the final three.

Over 197 episodes and one of the funniest movies of all time, Mystery Science Theater 3000 built a legion of devoted fans that jumped into action to shell out over $5.7 million of their hard-earned cash to reboot the series with Kickstarter. Don’t worry, they will be handsomely rewarded with T-shirts, coffee mugs, USB drives, and FOURTEEN NEW EPISODES OF BOTS, MADS, AND BAD MOVIES!

Over the years, the cast has seen changes — Joel Hodgson was replaced on-screen and off by head writer Michael J. Nelson in Season 5, and for this new block of episodes, stand-up and card-carrying MSTie Jonah Ray will don the jumpsuit. He’ll be joined by Hampton Yount as Crow T. Robot and Baron Vaughn as the quick-witted Tom Servo. On the side of evil, Patton Oswalt and Felicia Day are the new mad scientists who are subjecting Jonah Ray to the horrific B-movie schlock, and the producers promise some “big-name cameos” like Jerry Seinfeld, Joel McHale, and Mark Hamill.

No release date has been set quite yet, but Netflix has already teased the release on Twitter, and added a blank landing page to their site. Let the heavy breathing intensify.
