They've quietly had one of the longest-lasting unions in Hollywood.

On Nov. 21, Westworld star Ed Harris, 73, and Amy Madigan, 73, who is best known for her role in Field of Dreams, alongside Kevin Costner and Ray Liotta celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.

"It was like something you see in a movie or hear in a song," Madigan told Life in 1985, of first seeing Harris as he performed in Sam Shepard's play Cowboy in Los Angeles in 1980. "I just thought—'Well, there he is.' It was obvious to me that I'd see him again."

The couple wed in 1983, while they were starring together in the film Places in the Heart. Throughout their 40-year marriage, they've starred opposite each other in at least nine films and multiple Broadway plays.

''The acting thing is so intimate and personal,'' Harris said told the Chicago Tribune in 1985 of working with his wife. ''If we're not working together... you can't really talk about your day very well. When you're working together, though, there's so much that is shared, so much unspoken thought and emotion that goes into the work, that it really draws you closer.''

Of their occasional onscreen romantic scenes, Madigan has said that "'the closeness of being married gives us the ability and the freedom to do those kinds of things. I mean, with another actor you'd have to spend a lot of time and energy getting to know them first.''

Harris eventually became a four-time Oscar-nominated star for roles in films like Apollo 13 and The Truman Show, as well as Pollock and The Hours. He also made a splash playing Julia Roberts' husband in Stepmom, and was nominated for an Emmy for his role in Westworld.

Meanwhile, Madigan became a national sensation after she starred as Annie Kinsella in 1989's Field of Dreams, and opposite John Candy in Uncle Buck, also 1989. She also had a starring role for in the HBO hit Carnivale. She was also nominated for an Emmy for her role in the 1989 TV movie Roe vs. Wade.

In 1993, the couple welcomed their only child, Lily Dolores Harris, 30.

Of their marriage, Madigan has said that everyone long assumed they married after having a whirlwind affair on the set of their first movie, but she's denied that, saying they were together for two years prior.

"It's a nice Hollywood story, but it's not true," she told the Chicago Tribune.
