‘Westworld’ Recap: Surprise Ending Changes Everything

Sunday night’s episode of Westworld had an ending that many fans saw coming, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t shocking. A lot of people assumed that one or more of the humans might actually be hosts, and those assumptions came true in Sunday’s episode, “Trompe L’Oeil.” Trompe l’oeil is “a painting or design intended to create the illusion of a three-dimensional object,” and for those of you not fluent in French, it translates to “to deceive the eye,” which is appropriate for this episode. Bernard took Theresa to the cabin where he found Dr. Ford’s unregistered hosts to show her what the doctor’s been up to, but what they found was a hidden facility where new hosts were being made. Theresa was looking through some host blueprints, like the one for Dolores, and that’s when she stumbled upon a blueprint that resembled Bernard. When Theresa asked him about it, Bernard responded with “Doesn't look like anything to me,” which tipped off Theresa that he was a host. That’s when Dr. Ford appeared behind them and confirmed Theresa’s thoughts by saying, “They cannot see the things that will hurt them.” After explaining everything to Theresa, Dr. Ford whispered "And in that sleep, what dreams may come," then he prompted Bernard attack her. The episode ended with Theresa slouched on the ground with blood streaks behind her on the wall. So it looks like Theresa won’t be around any more, unless, of course, Dr. Ford makes a robot Theresa.
