All westbound lanes of highway running through the Midlands blocked by crash

All of the westbound lanes on a major highway running through the Midlands were blocked following an afternoon crash, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

The wreck closed the lanes on Interstate 26, near Exit 115, SCDOT said. That’s in the Cayce area of Lexington County, and the exit is the junction with U.S. 21, U.S. 176 and U.S. 321.

The crash happened at about 1:20 p.m., according to SCDOT.

Information about the cause of the crash, and the number of vehicles involved, was not available. Traffic cameras showed emergency vehicles responding to the scene.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety did not say if anyone was injured in the crash.

Traffic cameras showed vehicles backed up for at least 3 miles, while several miles of road ahead of the collision were empty lanes.

Information about when the lanes would be reopened and the scene would be cleared was not available. Drivers in the area were urged to use caution and be patient.
