West Virginia QB Will Grier out weeks after gruesome finger injury (Updated)
West Virginia quarterback Will Grier suffered a broken middle finger on his right hand attempting to dive for a touchdown against Texas on Saturday.
Mountaineers coach Dana Holgorsen announced Monday that Grier will be out 4-6 weeks, confirming an ESPN report saying Grier would be out for weeks.
Grier, who already has had surgery on the finger, will miss the regular season finale at Oklahoma but has not been totally ruled out of WVU’s bowl game. However, Holgorsen acknowledged it’s “going to be kind of tough” for him to return that quickly.
The injury occurred in the first quarter against the Longhorns when Grier dove toward the end zone and his right throwing hand landed violently on the turf. As Grier got up, his right middle finger was pointing, uh, to the right.

After West Virginia’s medical staff popped the finger back into place, Grier was taken back to the locker room. He was replaced in the game, which WVU lost 28-14, by Chris Chugunov.
Chugunov, who went 14-of-26 for 189 yards and a touchdown, will make his first career start against the Sooners.
