West Virginia DC quips he should be fired after 59-31 loss to Oklahoma
West Virginia defensive coordinator Tony Gibson was a man of few words following his team’s blowout loss to Oklahoma on Saturday.
The Mountaineers gave up 646 yards of total offense to the Sooners, who rushed for 313 yards and passed for 333.
After the game, Gibson was succinct in a statement that lasted approximately 10 seconds.
“Obviously we all saw that,” Gibson said. “Defensively we sucked up front, we sucked at linebacker, we sucked at DB. Dana should probably fire me after that. That’s all I got.”
Yeah, there were no positives to be gained from the game for the Mountaineers. Gibson’s self-reflection was about as realistic as it could be.
The performance cemented Mayfield’s status as the Heisman frontrunner despite his benching at the start of the game. Thanks to Oklahoma’s explosive offense, he only missed the first two plays of the game because the Sooners’ opening drive was simply a 66-yard run by Mayfield’s replacement, Kyler Murray, and then a touchdown run by running back Rodney Anderson.
The loss drops West Virginia to 7-5. The Mountaineers could be without starting quarterback Will Grier for whatever bowl game the team ends up going to. Grier missed Saturday’s game because of a broken right middle finger sustained vs. Texas a week ago.
