‘We Were the Lucky Ones’ leading man Logan Lerman is coming for that Emmy

Hulu’s acclaimed new limited series “We Were the Lucky Ones” is led by Logan Lerman. who give the best performance of his career. Adapted from Georgia Hunter‘s 2017 book of the same, the story follows the Kurcs, a Polish Jewish family torn apart by WWII. It’s a difficult watch but creator Erica Lipez has crafted a gripping, vital narrative with Lerman at the center of the show. He plays Addy Kurc, the middle child who pursues a career as a composer in post-war Paris. Critics agree, Lerman is a revelation in this role.

Proma Khosla (Indie Wire) stated: “As Addy, Lerman is siloed from the other siblings for almost the entire series, but never waivers in his portrayal of someone sustained by hope and eventually in the haze of grief.”

Maggie Levitt (Collider) observed: “Lerman is another clear standout in the series, though his performance is more subtle—mirroring Addy’s more subdued personality when compared to his little sister. As an artist, a free spirit, and a hopeless romantic, these quiet yearnings carry Addy through the worst of the horrors he faces, and it’s quite compelling to watch his love story blossom with Eliska (Lihi Kornowski) amid such a tumultuous time.”

Angie Han (The Hollywood Reporter) summarized: “Standouts in the ensemble include Lerman, who crumples inward as Addy’s optimism flags over years without word from his kin.”

As a result, Lerman could earn his first-ever Emmy nomination. He will be competing against some major competition in the guise of Emmy-favorite Jon Hamm (“Fargo”), the ever-great Tom Hollander (“Feud: Capote vs the Swans”), and man of the moment Andrew Scott (“Ripley”). However, while the competition is fierce, there is a way into the Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor lineup for Lerman.

Firstly, he is a young leading man going from strength to strength as an actor and voters always make time for that sort of performer in this category. Recent such nominees include Steven Yeun (“Beef”), Taron Egerton (“Black Bird”), Evan Peters (“Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”), Daniel Radcliffe (“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”), Hamish Patel (“Station Eleven”), and Jeremy Pope (“Hollywood”).

Like Egerton and Radcliffe, Lerman is another young movie star who is trying his hand at leading the line in a major TV show. Others who have gone on to earn nominations here include Andrew Garfield (“Under the Banner of Heaven”) and Riz Ahmed (“The Night Of”).

Lerman feels most similar to Radcliffe. Both of them started out as child actors headlining major movie franchises (Lerman in “Percy Jackson” and Radcliffe in “Harry Potter”) and have since then transitioned into interesting actors with varied filmographies — Logan has featured in the likes of “Fury,” “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” “Shirley,” and “Bullet Train.” This arc culminated in a career-first Emmy nomination for Radcliffe, recognizing the new phase of his career and his impressive transformation into an accomplished actor. Lerman could follow the exact same trajectory.

Plus, Lerman is starring in a period drama, which is a genre voters like in this category. Peters, Pope, Kumail Nanjiani (“Welcome to Chippendales”), Ewan McGregor (“Halston”), and “Hamilton” duo Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr. all earned bids for period dramas.

The story is also based on Hunter’s own ancestors, so there is truth to this tale, which we know Emmy voters like, too. Peters, Egerton, Radcliffe, Nanjiani, McGregor, Hamilton, Colin Firth (“The Staircase”), Michael Keaton (“Dopesick”), and Sebastian Stan (“Pam & Tommy”) were all nominated for their starring roles in limited series based on true stories.
