We went looking for Evansville's most expensive restaurant menu item.

EVANSVILLE – We recently went on a fun search to find Evansville’s most expensive single menu item, and it turned up on the far South Side of town at The House of Como.

The House of Como is an Evansville classic. As you drive down, down, and down Kentucky Avenue and finally pull up to the tiny building with the disintegrating sign and Santa statues, we must admit it’s not the place an out-of-towner might have guessed would house the most expensive menu item in Evansville.

We guessed though, because we know it’s one of a few places that serve the highest quality steaks you can get in the area.

To our surprise, however, it wasn’t a steak, not even Como’s giant three-pound T-bone, that took the prize. It wasn’t even lobster. It was Como’s full rack of lamb, which is selling, right now, for a whopping $98.

According to owner Libby Hage, Como serves American grassfed lamb, and the prices for it have skyrocketed lately. An internet search found Midwestern grassfed, grain-finished frenched lamb racks from one source selling for $89.99 for one roughly 2 pound rack, and another source selling two non-frenched racks, just over 4 pounds, for $238.96… so we’re feeling that Como’s prices aren’t out of line considering you get it cooked with side items and don’t have to do the dishes.

The difference in American lamb is evident. The chops are larger, more tender and less strong tasting than the New Zealand lamb found in many stores. At The House of Como, the chops are cut, rubbed with butter and seasoning and quickly oven-seared before being served with rice pilaf, grilled onions and peppers and a side of sweet mint jelly.

And, the plate is easily large enough to be shared. Add a dish of Como’s famous Arabian salad with flat bread and maybe a couple desserts and you’re all set.

Another interesting thing about this lamb dinner is that Como’s customers aren’t blinking an eye. Server Stacey Murray said it’s being ordered just as often as ever, even though the price has gone up. “We have people travel to come get this lamb,” she said. “I’ve even had someone from Australia come in here and tell me this was the best lamb he’d ever had. It’s very mild.”

The House of Como. If you know, you know.

It’s House of Como’s thing to go big on meat. The beef is prime, and the three-pound T-bone runs in the neighborhood of $80, which makes it the second-most expensive single menu item in Evansville (although again, $26.66 a pound for prime T-bone ain't bad at all, especially considering it's cooked for you). But don’t get us wrong, over-the-top meat isn’t all that The House of Como offers. There are plenty of modestly priced dishes on the menu as well. The two thick-cut pork chops are quite reasonably priced by 2023 standards at $28.

If you look in the Arabian menu section, the cinnamon scented baked chicken Djage, served with rice, is only $14 ($15 for white meat) and seafood dishes range from $13-$17.50. You’ll find other Arabian specialties, pastas, appetizers and desserts as well, all of which have a great following in Evansville.
