Who went home on 'American Idol'? Why Nashville's Emmy Russell didn't advance

Nashvillian Emmy Russell's "American Idol" run has come to an end one week before the show's grand finale.

The granddaughter of country music legend Loretta Lynn failed to get enough votes to advance to the top three after Sunday night's episode of the reality singing competition.

The contestant pool was narrowed from five to three, with Russell and Triston Harper not making the cut.

What songs did Emmy Russell sing on Sunday's 'American Idol'?

Fellow Nashvillian and country singer Kane Brown mentored Russell for the show's 's Disney night episode where she sang Miley Cyrus' "The Climb," and "Carried Me With You," from the movie "Onward."

"I can just really relate to the journey," she told Brown on the show. "It's been such a climb being a part of this. Sometimes I just want to turn around and go home, but then you are like 'no. Don't give up on yourself. You got this. And then you look down and you're like 'that was worth the climb.'"

Seated at a black grand piano, Russell, wearing a shiny, lavender dress, delivered her signature, sweet vocals on the song from the "Hannah Montana" movie, although her nerves were apparent, affecting her voice at times.

Judge Katy Perry told Russell she thought the song was "so true for you."

"This whole journey has been about the climb and to not let that other negative voice be louder in your head," Perry told Russell. "Every step of the way you are conquering it. It's baby steps sometimes for you, but that's ok."

Judge Luke Bryan added, "I just love there are notes in that song at the beginning of this show you wouldn't have attempted." Lionel Ritchie said, "Your voice is your complete makeup of who you are. There are stylists and there are singers. You are a stylist."

Kane Brown's advice for Emmy Russell

"She's got such a great voice, just very timid," Brown said during a package on Sunday's show.

When Russell seemed nervous when singing the song for Brown, he said to her, "Nobody's here. Keep your eyes closed the whole time. No judges. We're back in church. Hit it."

After she sang, Brown told Russell, "Whenever you break out of your shell, I can tell you are going to be an animal."

Russell's second performance: 'You blew us away'

For her second performance, Russell, clad in a colorful mirror-patterned dress and purple ankle boots, walked the stage and greeted audience members while her mom clapped for her from side stage.

After a standing ovation from the judges, Perry said, "that was exactly the voice I want to hear coming out from you."

"I love when you are up on the stage, when you are reaching for a hand. It looks so good on you. Don't ever be afraid. Don't hide. You deserve to be out. Front. Center."

Bryan added she needs to continue to be proud of what she is doing.

"You are growing so much right in front of our eyes," he said.

Ritchie: "Confidence. Confidence. Then you step on the stage and blow them away. From now on in your career, remember that. You blew us away."

The season finale of "American Idol" is Sunday, May 19.
