Wells Adams on why birthdays are the 'kiss of death' on “Bachelor in Paradise”

Each week, Bachelor in Paradise bartender/de facto therapist Wells Adams will share his insights about the latest ridiculous happenings on the beach. This week, Wells shares his thoughts via email on Jess' confusion about Blake, the new contestant from Paradise Canada, and Kat's terrible, horrible, no good, very bad birthday.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Kat was the latest victim of the Paradise Birthday Curse. What do the Paradise gods have against birthdays?

WELLS ADAMS: There are no rules in Paradise. Actually, there is only one. And that rule is never, and I mean NEVER tell anyone it's your birthday. It's always the kiss of death. It's like these kids haven't watched the show before!

What do you think of how Tanner handled it when Davia asked him on a date? Should he have talked to Kat before saying yes?

Yes, probably. But I can't remember, did Kat ask Brayden if it was cool she went on a date before she said yes to Tanner? Hmmm. It's funny how things tend to come back around in Paradise!

This week, Sam from BIP Canada arrived on the beach. No one knew anything about her — would you say that's an advantage or a disadvantage for her?

I think it's an advantage. Have you ever met a celebrity, or an athlete, and it didn't live up to the hype? I know I have. Sometimes it's nice for people to have zero expectations.  It kind of takes the pressure off. Also, Sam is awesome! Just such a good vibe to be around. Did I use the word "vibe" right there? I'm old.

Rachel and Brayden became human piñatas on their date. If you had to choose from one of these messy Paradise dates, which would it be and why: Human piñata, human churro, or human burrito?

I hosted the human burrito date, and I have to say, it was a lot of fun! And you get to have a little snack after. So, I'd go with food ones!

Why do you think it took Jess so long to be honest about how she was feeling — or not feeling — about Blake?

Her nickname on the beach was "Baby Jess," which I think is mainly because she is so sweet and innocent — she's like a perfect angelic cherub. But it's also because she is very young, and I think her age shows a lot in some of these decisions with Blake. This is a great learning moment for her, in the future I think she will be better equipped to accurately express how she does or doesn't feel about someone.

ABC Wells repairs the broken Truth Box

In retrospect, it seems like wood was the wrong material for the Truth Box. Next season, if it comes back, what should it be made of?

You're telling me!  It's more gaff tape than hickory at this point.  I don't know, hardened steel? Diamond? Adamantium? Unobtainium?
