“I have no idea how much this is costing her, but it's a lot of money,” he tells PEOPLE

Wells Adams used to be a “one-tree guy” at Christmas. That was before he met Sarah Hyland.

“My wife is an insane person,” the Bachelor in Paradise star, 39, jokes to PEOPLE. “I don't put up the lights at my house. We live in Los Angeles, so we have a studio lighting company that comes and pimps our house out. …I have no idea how much this is costing her, but it's a lot of money. We have a giant team that comes in and then she's in charge of the inside.”

The festive undertaking continues in the interior. “We don't have one tree, we don't have two trees, we have three trees,” Wells adds. “We have one gaudy tree that's in one room. Then we have one tree that just has food ornaments in the dining room. And then we have another tree in the living room or the family room. So it looks like Santa came and just sprayed all over.”

Adams, who was co-hosting a Cocktail Collection holiday party with fellow BiP alum Joe Amabile, also opened up about throwing holiday gatherings — and Hyland's tendency to overcommit to making side dishes.

“She'll be like, okay, I'm going to do the mixed vegetable medley and the mashed potatoes and she does like 17 things,” Adams says of the Modern Family star, 33. “And then what ends up happening is that she only gets three done and then I have to do the rest of them. And I'm like, why did we try to do so much? Also, no one eats any of the food anyways. All you need is a good charcuterie board, some good booze and some good company.  And good music.”

For that, he can count on Daniel Ellsworth, one of his “oldest friends” from when he lived in Nashville. After Sarah and Dan start drinking cocktails (espresso martini for Sarah and old-fashioned for Dan), the fun starts.

“Dan gets on the piano and they start singing show tunes,” he says. “There will be a rendition of ‘Suddenly Seymour’ for sure. Something from Rent will be belted out. And so that's always good. Late night sing-alongs, ‘Piano Man’ will definitely be done.”

Adams admits that he joins in, adding, “I'll go get a guitar and be like, ‘I’m going to do this song’ and it's very embarrassing.”

Hyland and Adams tied the knot last year, after meeting on social media in 2017.

In August, the couple celebrated their first wedding anniversary with posts shared on their respective Instagram accounts.

"One year married to you flew by in a blink of an eye. You’re my HUSBAND. My best friend. My true north," Hyland wrote alongside a photograph of herself and Adams from their wedding day. "I love you more than words can say and every day is the best day when I’m with you. Marriage is the most fun I’ve ever had because I get to be married to you 💋."

Wells shared a photograph of the couple exchanging their vows, where the actress could be seen making a silly face.
