ALT presents 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'

Amarillo Little Theatre, 2019 Civic Circle, has kicked off its 2023-24 season with "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," but today's your last chance to catch the show. The local production's run ends after its 2:30 p.m. peformance on Sunday, Sept. 24.

Phelps returns to Starlight stage

David Phelps returns to Amarillo at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, at Starlight Ranch, 1415 Sunrise Drive.

A graduate from Baylor University, Phelps is credited among today’s most spectacular voices. His seemingly endless vocal range, which extends more than three octaves, coupled with his gift for communicating a song, has brought the house down in the world’s most prestigious venues.

FABBA Show plays tribute to original 'Dancing Queen' hitmakers at Globe-News Center Sept. 24

The FABBA Show comes to the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts, located at 500 S. Buchanan, on Sunday, Sept. 24. The show is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. The Tascosa (Amarillo) High String Quartet will join the professional musicians on stage to lend some local talent to this high energy homage to one of the world's most beloved pop groups of the '70s.

Collages created from AI on display in Southern Light Gallery at AC

René West, associate professor of photography at Amarillo College (AC), and Mark Penland, a freelance photographer and photography lab manager at Tarrant County College’s Northeast Campus, are now creating art with Artificial Intelligence (AI). They launched their recent collaboration, which they’ve dubbed the West Penland Alliance (WPA), in the summer of 2023.

Ever since, the collagists have been jointly creating large-scale tableaus out of AI images, and their first project, “Poetic Science,” is on display through Oct. 26 at AC’s Southern Light Gallery.

According to West, the title of WPA’s inaugural project, “Poetic Science,” references Ada Lovelace, who in 1843 published what many consider to be the first computer program. Lovelace referred to her algorithmic approach as Poetic Science, a blend of math and imagination.

'Book of Mormon' coming to civic center

The National Tour of "The Book of Mormon", winner of nine Tony Awards including Best Musical, will play a strictly limited one-night engagement at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, at the Amarillo Civic Center Complex Auditorium.

"The Book of Mormon" features book, music and lyrics by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone. The Broadway production is directed by Parker and two-time Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw and choreographed by Nicholaw. The tour is directed and choreographed by Jennifer Werner based on the original Broadway direction and choreography.

Since opening on March 24, 2011, "The Book of Mormon" has become one of the most successful shows in Broadway history, breaking the Eugene O’Neill Theatre house record more than 50 times. In addition to nine Tony Awards including Best Musical and the Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album, "The Book of Mormon" won five Drama Desk Awards including Best Musical, the NY Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, the Drama League Award for Best Musical and four Outer Critics Circle Awards including Best Musical.

The West End production opened in February 2013, winning four Olivier Awards including Best New Musical, and breaking the record for the highest single day of sales in West End history. The first-ever UK and European tour launched in Manchester in June 2019, winning ‘Best Theatre Show’ at the Manchester Evening News City Life Awards before touring throughout the UK and Europe.

Wildcat Bluff brings local musician to perform at Sunset and Songwriters

Wildcat Bluff Nature Center is hosting Sunset and Songwriters on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m., an evening program featuring local musicians at The Bluff. Guests are encouraged to BYOB, bring a lawn chair, and have a picnic out on the lawn during the performance. For September’s program, Wildcat Bluff will also be bringing a local food truck as a dinner option for people coming by after work.

Texas musician Ri Wolf from Ri Wolf & the Prairie Hawks will perform a solo set on The Bluff’s porch for community members. His music is described as “a guitar driven mix of country, soul, blues and rock, Ri brings these elements together for a unique, but familiar sound laced with stories true and familiar to those who call Texas and the Great Plains home.”

The local food truck coming by is Tacos Nayarit, offering authentic Mexican food and unique twists on some American classics. The program will be from 6 to 8 p.m., but guests are welcome to come and go as they please. Wildcat Bluff will also be selling a non-alcoholic “Sunset Drink” and gift shop items will be available to purchase. Sunset and Songwriters is included with Wildcat Bluff Membership or general admission. Visitors will just need to check in with staff at the Visitor’s Center prior to the event.

WT prof’s exhibit ‘Face!’ on display through Sept. 30

CANYON — A West Texas A&M University’s art faculty member’s explorations of a new medium are on view in an exhibition open now.

“Face!” by Marcus Melton, an associate professor of art in the Sybil B. Harrington College of Fine Arts and Humanities, is on view through Sept. 30 in the Dord Fitz Formal Gallery in Mary Moody Northen Hall.

Melton moves from graphic design, which he has taught at WT since 2008, into ceramics, producing a series of striking visages in clay, on platters, vessels and sculptures.

Melton, who teaches graphic design, typography, illustration and more, has earned several American Advertising Awards. He has exhibited work around the country and in London.

Donahew to perform at Starlight

Casey Donahew takes the Starlight stage with special guest, Chris Colston, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30.

For Donahew, it has always been about the song, whether he was singing about colorful, hilarious characters that might live down the street from you or come to Thanksgiving dinner every year, or the painful devastation of something as serious as addiction.

'Exorcist' returns to big screen for anniversary

Cinemark Hollywood 16 Amarillo, 9100 Canyon Drive, is hosting a special 50th anniversary screening of "The Exorcist" in remembrance of the late William Friedkin at 4 and 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1 and again at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4.

When a charming 12-year-old girl takes on the characteristics and voices of others, doctors say there is nothing they can do. As people begin to die, the girl's mother realizes her daughter has been possessed by the devil — and that her daughter's only possible hope lies with two priests and the ancient rite of demonic exorcism. This extended version contains an additional 12 minutes to the original theatrical version.

As part of the Warner Bros. Studio 100th Celebration and to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of The Exorcist’s theatrical release, Warner Bros worked closely with the director, Friedkin, on the restoration of this iconic film. WT hosts Distinguished Lecture Series

CANYON — West Texas A&M University’s Distinguished Lecture Series will host nationally known speakers during the fall, including renowned poets, a Western historian, a major corporate leader and an innovator in dyslexia research. DLS events are free and open to the public.

Microsoft executive Sandra Lopez, who has been named a top woman in media and technology, will speak about “Career Empowerment and Leadership through Diversity, Respect and Inclusion.” Lopez’s speech will begin at noon Oct. 4 in the Alumni Banquet Hall. Lunch is provided.

Up next is the 11th annual Helen Piehl Distinguished Lecture, featuring dyslexia expert Dr. Jack M. Fletcher on “The Reading Brain: Understanding the Science of Dyslexia.” The speech and workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 5 in Legacy Hall and will have a virtual option.

Amarillo Opera presents 'Tosca'

Americana singer-songwriter Chris Knight to perform at Hoot's Pub Oct. 13

The 12-city tour will kick off on Nov. 29 and runs through Dec. 17, celebrating the most wonderful time of the year.

The tour is scheduled to make a stop in Amarillo on Dec. 16 at the Amarillo Civic Center Auditorium.
