Music in the Gardens concert series continues through Aug. 31

Music in the Gardens summer concert series continues on Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Amarillo Botanical Gardens. Admission is $10, or $5 for members.

Remaining performers in the lineup include Touching Voodoo (Aug. 17), Tennessee Tuckness (Aug. 24) and Geezers Gone Wild (Aug. 31).

Calf Fry Festival set for Aug. 19 at Starlight Ranch

The Starlight Ranch Event Center hosting a unique culinary experience this month. The Calf Fry Festival will take place Aug. 19, starting at 5 p.m. at its location on 1415 Sunrise Drive.

This event brings together foodies and thrill-seekers from all over to celebrate this unconventional delicacy, according to an event post. Calf fries, also known as mountain oysters, are a local specialty and a must-try for any adventurous eater. With live music, drinks, and a friendly atmosphere, you're sure to have a great time at this one-of-a-kind festival, whether you're a seasoned pro or trying calf fries for the first time.

Proceeds go to the benefit board for the Potter County Sheriff and Fire Dept. Each ticket includes admission as well as a platter of calf fries, french fries, coleslaw and Texas Toast. Live music from Bomb City Groove will be offered from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., followed by Velvet Funk from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Food service takes place from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Southall takes stage at Starlight Ranch

Join Starlight Ranch as they welcome Southall, previously known as Read Southall Band, to the stage with special guest, Wight Lighters, in Amarillo on Friday, Aug. 25, in the Moon Palace.

In 2015, the local songwriting scene of Stillwater, Oklahoma, brought together four like-minded individuals from completely different background who wanted nothing more than to play music.

More recently, their third studio album, "For the Birds", is ambitious and captures vigorous, rock ‘n’ roll energy with elements of country and southern rock. "There is a ton of excitement building around Read Southall Band at the moment."

Symphony kicks of 100th season with special event

The Amarillo Symphony will kick off its Centennial Season at Hodgetown with a one-of-a-kind concert featuring country star Randall King. Gates open at 6 p.m. on Aug. 26.

Join ASO as it performs a mix of patriotic and Western favorites with local stars Eric Barry and the Opera Cowgirls, finishing the night with King’s biggest hits, and a fireworks finale.

Hereford native and up-and-coming country artist King released his major label debut album, "Shot Glass", in March. King was named a 2022 Country Artist to Watch by Pandora and Country Now and has more than 120 million global streams.

Yoakum coming to Civic Center

Country music star Dwight Yoakum will be on stage at 8 p.m. Sept. 1 in the Amarillo Civic Center Auditorium.

Yoakam has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide, and he is a 21-time nominated, multiple GRAMMY Award winner. He has 12 gold albums and nine platinum or multi-platinum albums, with five of those albums topping Billboard’s Country Albums chart and another 14 landing in the Top 10.

Nearly 40 of Yoakam’s singles have charted on Billboard, with 14 peaking in the Top 10. Yoakam is a recipient of the Artist of the Year award from the Americana Music Association, the most prestigious award offered by the organization, he will be inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in the Songwriter/Artist category at the 49th anniversary Gala on Oct. 14, 2019 in Nashville.

In addition to his musical career, Yoakam is a formidable film and television actor who has appeared in over 40 feature films, including "Sling Blade" and "Panic Room".

Uncle Lucius takes Starlight stage

Uncle Lucius takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, at Starlight Ranch's Moon Palace.

Five years ago it seemed like Uncle Lucius had run its course. They had torn a swath out of the Texas roots music scene over a 13-year run, worn out five vans and recorded four albums, and grown a reputation at home and abroad as a thrilling, dynamic live act. Long-time fans were certain they'd be a massive global hit. The tide went out, and Uncle Lucius folded up their sails.

The audience had other ideas. Interest in the band continued to grow during their absence from the touring circuit. Pro athletes used their songs for walk on music, and top-rated television shows featured their music during pivotal scenes.

They never intended to reunite. Some things are not up to us. Some people are made to play together and meant to create together.

Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse Live in Concert kicks off upcoming tours for Amarillo Civic Center

Celebrity Attractions and Amarillo Civic Center Complex are excited to announce four shows coming to Amarillo between September 2023 and April 2024. According to a news release, all four tours are brand-new to Amarillo.

Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse at 7 p.m. Sept. 6: Go back to where it all began with this concert event, featuring a soundtrack that blends symphonic orchestral music with hip-hop. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Live in Concert pairs a screening of the Academy Award-winning animated film with live musicians and turntables featuring a DJ scratcher live on stage. Emmy winner Daniel Pemberton composed a sprawling score of boundary-pushing original music that is complimented with song contributions by Post Malone, Lil Wayne, Jaden Smith, and Nicki Minaj. The hip-hop based score results in a sonic universe that is woven throughout the fabric of the film, supporting its themes of resilience and universal heroism. Joining the tour is The Broadway Sinfonietta, an all-women and majority women-of-color orchestra led by conductor Emily Marshall.

Johnny Cash - The Official Concert Experience at 7 p.m. Oct. 30: Johnny Cash - The Official Concert Experience brings songs and stories from the “Man in Black” to the stage in a way that audiences haven’t seen or heard before. With video of Johnny from episodes of The Johnny Cash TV Show projected on a screen above the stage, a live band and singers will accompany him in perfect sync. This concert experience will showcase iconic performances from the TV show and highlight the spirit of the legend by revisiting some of his memorable words and anecdotes. Cash will perform some of his biggest hits, including “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Ring of Fire,” and “I Walk the Line,” and share stories of people he met along the way whose causes he championed – the working man from all walks of life. Plus, onstage male and female singers will split vocal duties performing their own takes on Cash hits.

ASO presents Passionate Music

Amarillo Symphony Orchestra will kick off its official season with Passionate Music at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at Sharpened Iron Studios, 1314 S. Polk St.

The season opener will feature the Amarillo Symphony’s concertmaster Espen Lilleslåtten alongside cellist Sally Guenther, pianist Elena Lacheva and Harrington String Quartet’s violist Vesselin Todorov.

The repertoire includes: Anna Clyne, "A Thousand Mornings" (violin, cello and piano); Richard Strauss, "Violin Sonata"; Gabriel Faure, "Piano Quartet No. 1 in C minor"

Friends of Fogelberg concert to be held Sept. 8, cancer screening Sept. 9

Tickets went on sale Friday, Aug. 4 for the Friends of Fogelberg XIII: Dan & Diggin' Mo' Sixties concert set for Sept. 8 at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m., and admission is $25.

Friends of Fogelberg is an annual tribute concert in Amarillo honoring the late musician Dan Fogelberg, who lost his life to prostate cancer in 2007.

Tickets for this year's concert will be available to purchase starting Friday online at www.panhandletickets.com, at United Supermarkets locations and the Amarillo Civic Center box office.

In addition, there will be a free prostate cancer screening for men older than age 45 on Sept. 9, from 9 a.m. to noon at Amarillo Urology Associates, located at 1900 Medi Park Dr. in Amarillo. No appointment is necessary, and a news release notes a simple blood test could save your life.

Joe Ed Coffman, a longtime fan of Dan Fogelberg, began Friends of Fogelberg in 2008. Local musicians come together to put on a benefit concert to celebrate Fogelberg's life and music, create awareness and education about prostate cancer, raise funds for the fight against prostate cancer and also have a great time. Throughout the years, the concert has expanded to include songs of other musicians such as The Beatles, Eagles, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and this year will include a nod to the late Gordon Lightfoot.

Amarillo Symphony Orchestra presents "Rhapsody in Blue" at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 15 and 16 at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts, 500 S. Buchanan St.

Showcasing pianist Michelle Cann on George Gershwin’s classic work, the concert will also include Aaron Copland’s rousing audience favorite, "Rodeo".

'The Book of Mormon' tour to make 1-night-only stop at Amarillo Civic Center in September

The national tour of "The Book of Mormon," winner of nine Tony Awards including Best Musical, will play a limited, one-night engagement on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at the Amarillo Civic Center Complex Auditorium. Tickets went on sale for the Amarillo tour date on July 28.

Since opening on March 24, 2011, "The Book of Mormon" has become one of the most successful shows in Broadway history, according to a news release. In addition to multiple Tony Awards and a Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album, "The Book of Mormon" has won five Drama Desk Awards as well as honors from the NY Drama Critics Circle, the Drama League and Outer Critics Circle.

The show follows two young, eager Mormon missionaries who are sent to a remote Ugandan village but find their message falls on deaf ears, as the locals are more concerned with their oppressive warlord and issues like famine and disease. The musical is recommended for older teens and adults for mature language and content.

"The Book of Mormon" features book, music and lyrics by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone, and the Broadway production is directed by Parker and two-time Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw and choreographed by Nicholaw. The tour is directed and choreographed by Jennifer Werner, based on the original Broadway direction and choreography.

Other announced tour dates in the area include Midland (Sept. 27-28), El Paso (Sept. 29-Oct. 1) and Lubbock (May 17-19), as well as stops in Fort Worth, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio.

Hoodoo Mural Festival infuses downtown Amarillo with live music, live art Sept. 30

The annual Hoodoo Mural Festival is scheduled to take place this year on Sept. 30 in downtown Amarillo. Each year, the outdoor festival brings together local and national artists for a family-friendly celebration of music and art. The festival will feature approximately 20 total murals throughout downtown.

DJ, producer, and pianist LP Giobbi headlines the music side, which includes 20 music artists. Others on the music lineup include Kaelin Ellis, Giacomo Turra, Cody Jasper, DJ Cassandra, Bomb City Sound and more, as well as a new local music stage.

This year’s muralists include Trav & Emjay, Alli Koch, Jeremy Biggers, Jeks, Ariel Parrow, Malcolm Byers, Blank Spaces and more.
