The Weeknd breaks Spotify record for most streams in one day

Following the release of his newest album, Starboy, Spotify revealed that The Weeknd has officially broken the record for most streams on the service in one single day.

“Spotify’s continued support of The Weeknd has now reached historic proportions and also reinforces the tremendous growth of global streaming,” Monte Lipman, chairman and co-founder of Republic Records, wrote in a statement.

Starboy was released debuted Nov. 25 via Republic Records, just a day after he debuted a short film called Mania featuring most of the album’s new music. By Saturday, he broke the streaming record.

Spotify’s Global Head of Creator Services, Troy Carter congratulated the Canadian singer and his team in a statement: “We’re proud to have partnered with The Weeknd, his management, and Republic Records on a phenomenal album. We look forward to breaking even more records together in the near future.”
