This weekend in Bloomington: Quilt show, home show, Sundance film shorts, cigar box lamp

If you like quilts, you'll want to stick around Bloomington this weekend for the annual Indiana Heritage Quilt Show Thursday through Saturday. Plus, "Black Quilters: Hard Topics, Soft Blows" will be the topic of discussion Saturday at the Monroe County History Center. It's also time for the monthly Friday Bloomington Gallery Walk and the Sundance Film Festival Short Film tour is at the Buskirk-Chumley. For kids and their families, there's Friday night's Banneker Carnival. For dog and pet lovers, the public library will offer two Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race events and a Pet Expo will be Sunday in Switchyard Park.

Indiana Heritage Quilt Show Thursday through Saturday

More than 200 quilts will be on display at the 31st annual Indiana Heritage Quilt Show at the Monroe Convention Center, 302 S. College Ave. Show hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Vendors will be selling fabrics and other sewing accessories and a special traveling exhibit, "A Drop of Emerald Poison," will feature quilters from Indiana, Ohio and Michigan. Admission is $10 per day or $20 for three days for adults, $2 for youth ages 7-12.

Get inspired, meet professionals at the annual Bloomington Home Show

Spruce up that tired bath, find a landscaper, or plant the seeds for your dream home project at the Bloomington Home Show happening Friday through Sunday at The Warehouse, 1525 S. Rogers St.

More than 100 vendors are expected to take part. You can interview local professionals for your next job or just get some advice. Hours are 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Food will be available for purchase. Donations of nonperishable food and non-food items for Hoosier Hills Food Bank will be accepted. Admission is free.

Gallery Walk artists, local and global, share their visions Friday night

A dozen downtown Bloomington art galleries will participate in Gallery Walk, open 5-8 p.m. Friday.

At Pictura Gallery in the FAR Center for Contemporary Arts, 202 S. Rogers St., artists Cristobal Ascencio and Andres Mario de Varona share artwork built from their efforts to connect with a deceased parent. At By Hand Gallery in Fountain Square, abstract paintings by Joel Washington, a local artist better known for his portraits, will be on display. Sundance Film Festival Short Film Tour shown Friday

The Sundance Film Festival Short Film Tour will be at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave, Friday at 8 p.m. In partnership with Ryder Film Series, the general admission show will cost $11 for adults and $9 for students with ID.

Banneker Carnival has fun for the family on Friday

The Banneker Carnival will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday indoors at the Banneker Community Center, 930 W. Seventh St. Admission is $5 per family. Face painting, carnival games, a bounce house, crafts, story time and snacks will be happening in the gym. This is for families with kids ages 2-12 years.

Rock out at The Cabin with Major Danger

Let loose and turn back time to the golden age of head bangin' rock when local cover band Major Danger takes the stage at The Cabin Restaurant and Lounge, 4015 Ind. 446. Major Danger played its first show at The Cabin almost one year ago. Ease into the groove with opening band Zillafyde.

Catch the show at 7 p.m. Friday.

Black Quilters: Hard Topics, Soft Blows Saturday at history center

"Black Quilters: Hard Topics, Soft Blows," part of the Advancing Racial Equity Speakers Bureau, will be 1:30-3 p.m. Saturday at the Monroe County History Center, 202 E. Sixth St. The African American community has used quilts to sometimes tell its stories of both struggles and triumphs. Tony Jean Dickerson, a quilter who is founding president of the Akoma Ntoso Modern Quilt Guild of Central Indiana, will share the art of quilting's prominent place in African American culture.

Sled dog stories, songs Saturday at the library

Listen to new books being read, sing some winter songs and celebrate incredible sled dogs just in time for the start of the 2024 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, 11-11:45 a.m. Saturday at the Monroe County Public Library, 303 E. Kirkwood Ave. People of all ages are welcome.

Make some crafts, tour the home of IU's first president on Saturday

Family friendly crafts and a hands-on tour of Wylie House, the historic home of Indiana University's first president that is now a museum, will be offered 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday beginning in the Morton C. Bradley Education Center, 307 E. Second St. Activities feature a hands-on make-and-take craft such as seed paper, suncatchers, pressed flowers and more. After finishing your craft, stick around for a tour of the Wylie House for all ages at 2 p.m.

Pet Expo at Switchyard Park

Visit pet-related local businesses and talk with experts about training, food, pet health and wellness, toys, and more from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Switchyard Park Pavilion. Turn a cigar box into a light at Gather's Wired Up, Wine Down

From 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Gather, 116 N. Walnut St., will host a cigar box lamp building event that includes trivia and wine. For $45, you get everything you need to build your cigar box lamp, tools to use to put it together, instruction from SmokEy Lights' Chief Luminary, drinks and the chance to play trivia games and participate in scavenger hunts for prizes.

Class must have at least 10 participants registered by 5 p.m. Saturday night to proceed.

Iditarod musher Matt Paveglio shares stories Monday

Snowy Trails & Doggie Tales: An Evening with Iditarod Musher Matt Paveglio will be 6-7 p.m. Monday, March 4, at the Monroe County Public Library, 303 E. Kirkwood Ave. Paveglio will be chatting all the way from Alaska, where he will recount his experience competing in the 2022 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and how he started mushing. For all ages.
