This weekend in Bloomington: "Barbie," other flicks, High Proof Laughs, jazz, storytelling

We see tales, in film and in person, and music of many genres in your future. Start with a family friendly movie Thursday at the Bus-Chum or storytelling at the downtown library on Friday. Keep a bag of popcorn handy for more movies — "Barbie," "Thin Man" and "The Notebook" are showing on Bloomington screens. If you're looking for something different, there's High Proof Laughs on Sunday and a jazzy way to celebrate Valentine's Day at Blockhouse Bar.

Japanese film "Secret World of Arrietty" Thursday at Buskirk-Chumley Theater

The animated fantasy film "Secret World of Arrietty" will show at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave. Tickets are $9-$11 to spend an evening learning about the 4-inch-tall Clock family, who live in another family's house, and the discovery of the Clock's teenage daughter, Arrietty. The 2010 movie is rated G.

Blues-rock music by the Hungarian Slacks Thursday at the Orbit Room

The Hungarian Slacks, a blues-rock quintet, will play guitar-driven originals and atypical covers 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Orbit Room, 107 N. College Ave., Suite 001. The free show is for all ages but front-table reservations are $15.

Classical music Friday afternoon at Bell Trace

For a different type of music, pay a visit to the Bell Trace Commons Room, 800 Bell Trace Circle, at 1:15 p.m. Friday. Diane Rivera, pianist, will play several pieces by Schubert, two Debussy preludes and Mendelssohn's Song without Words, Op. 38, No. 6 and Variations series, Op. 54.

Settle in at the public library Friday evening for some tales

Wintertelling is the craft of sharing stories to fill long winter nights with entertainment. Members of the Bloomington Storytellers Guild will do just that 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the downtown Monroe County Public Library, 303 E. Kirkwood Ave. A little tale to tell now: the local guild is celebrating 50 years of storytelling and began at the public library as a group of librarians and other interested tellers.

"Barbie," starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will show at 10 p.m. Friday at IU Cinema, 1213 E. Seventh St. Tickets are $5 for students and $8 for general admission.

If you're into older flicks, "The Thin Man" will show at 4 p.m. Saturday. The movie is a famous whodunnit with comedy, crime and mystery.

High Proof Laughs at Limestone Comedy Festival on Sunday

A live comedy night in collaboration with the Limestone Comedy Festival will be 6-9 p.m. Sunday at Cardinal Spirits, 922 S. Morton St. Headliner Holly Lynnea will perform along with Shanda Sung, Annam Choudry and Teagan Hughes. Doors will open at 6 with the show beginning at 7 p.m. for the age 21-plus show. Tickets are $10.

Valentine's Day showing of "The Notebook" at the Bus-Chum

"The Notebook," based on the 1996 best seller written by Nicholas Sparks, will show at 7 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. The story is centered around a relationship of long romantic love spanning over five decades. It's another film starring Ryan Gosling, alongside Rachel McAdams. Tickets are $13-$15 and can be purchased online, buskirkchumley.org, or at 114 E. Kirkwood Ave.

Spend Feb. 14 listening to jazz at Blockhouse Bar

Frank Glover, an Indianapolis esteemed jazz clarinetist, will join with Indiana University jazz faculty pianist Luke Gillespie and bassist Jeremy Allen for an intimate trio playing love-themed jazz standards at 7:30 and 9 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Blockhouse Bar, 205 S. College Ave. Tickets are $10 for general public and $5 for students.
