A weekend of art and jive at the Sutter Theater Center in Yuba City

Oct. 19—Pam Nowak, pronounced "no-vack," is a recently retired art department chair at Yuba City High School. During her summer abroad in Italy, Nowak taught English to young Italian students using art as a medium and vehicle to facilitate language learning

This period gave her some personal time to work on a whole new collection entitled "Fancy Flights," centered around hummingbirds. Hummingbirds in art have been popular subjects for centuries. Exclusively found in the New World, hummingbirds also feature prominently in indigenous cultures. While still based on and inspired by actual hummingbirds, Nowak's latest monograph could best be described as "fantasy birds." Her use of metallic watercolors offers the same iridescence that helps make their presence so mesmerizing in real life.

These paintings will be on display Friday during this month's opening gallery reception at the Sutter Theater Center for the Arts in Yuba City. This free event will include appetizers, beer, and wine from 5-7 p.m. with a chance to meet and greet Nowak and discuss her creative processes. The show will be on display throughout the month of October and can be viewed during regular business hours or by appointment.

In other news, the Gay Galvin Jazz Jive band is set to perform at the Sutter Theater Center on Saturday starting at 7 p.m. The Jazz Jive group consists of Rich Celio on drums, Dylan McConnell on bass, and Gay Galvin on keyboard and vocals. The concert will include many songs of the season including "The Autumn Leaves," "Moondance," and "Devil May Care" along with some other jazz classics and originals.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and tickets may be purchased online, at the theater, or at the door for $20 each. Regular box office hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Seating will be limited.
