ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke with Wednesday stars Hunter Doohan, Emma Myers, Percy Hynes-White, and Joy Sunday about Netflix’s Addams Family series by Tim Burton, which is now streaming.
“The series will chart the titular heroine’s years as a student at the peculiar Nevermore Academy as she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability,” reads the synopsis, “While also thwarting a monstrous killing spree terrorizing the local town and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships of the strange and diverse student body.”
Tyler Treese: Emma, Enid’s such a fun character, and I really like the friendship she developed with Thing throughout. How was it filming with what I assume was a prosthetic and seeing it come to life?
Emma Myers: Well, it was a mix of a prosthetic and a real person. We had a guy named Victor who’s a magician who would actually do all of Thing’s movements. Sometimes it was really tricky filming with the prosthetic because you kind of have to hold it in a specific spot, and then they have to do the CGI stuff. But I really enjoyed it. It was something I’d never done before — working with a hand.
Joy, I love the character Bianca and the whole aspect of her being a siren and the vulnerability that comes with that. Are these relationships she’s having real? Can you trust somebody that has that power? Can you speak to that depth of the character?
Joy Sunday: You know, it’s funny. I think, of course, somebody who has the power to persuade people might seem really intimidating, but at the end of the day, we all want to be liked and loved by the people that we like and love. And so, sure, what she can say can manipulate the situation, but at the end of the day, she is trying to organically create relationships. So I think that’s what I really hung onto for Bianca, not just staying at the surface level of “everything she says might be a lie.” At the end of the day, she wants something that we could all relate to. So I think I drew from that heavily
Percy, I love the mystery element of this show because everybody gets suspicious — especially Xavier throughout. With this murder mystery in mind, did that impact how you approached scenes?
Percy Hynes-White: A little bit, yeah. There were a lot of scenes where I thought about the area in the story where it was taking place and what you knew at that point. So a lot of the stuff … I acted as though I was the killer, you know? I acted as suspiciously as possible sometimes. When I approached the scenes, it was with that in mind.
Hunter, the show’s so gorgeous, and it was shot in Romania. What was your biggest highlight of filming in Romania?
Hunter Doohan: All of the sets are amazing. Most of them were built from scratch there. I know you guys probably have more to say about the actual locations in Romania cause they shot the outside of the Nevermore Academy there. But for me, all of my scenes, like in the coffee shop … all of Jericho was built in the middle of a field before that. I thought the show turned out beautiful as well. I was totally captivated by it.
