Screwing with the classics can be dangerous business. They're classics for a reason, after all. But sometimes, something comes along that proves the value of making an old standby feel new again. And this spring, J.Crew teamed up with Barbour to show us all just how successful reworking a vintage style can be.

Here's the gist of it: Way back in 1983, J.Crew introduced its signature Barn Jacket, a multi-pocketed, function-first piece of outerwear that also happened to look fantastic. Inspired by old-school American workwear, it immediately became a staple of the brand's ever-expanding repertoire. Even further back in 1894, Barbour pioneered its waxed cotton outerwear, using a weather-beating fabric that just gets better (and more personal) as it ages. Now, they've come together in one jacket. Here's why it's not to be missed.

It's timelessly stylish.

Yes, okay, I know. The term "timeless" gets thrown around a lot when it comes to menswear. But think about it: This silhouette is in its mid-30s and remains basically unaltered. In this current fashion landscape-where things are moving a mile a minute and trends shift constantly-a three-and-a-half decade run is more than enough to vouch for a piece's fashion bonafides. And that's just what J.Crew brings to the table. Barbour's been an outerwear leader for more than a century. If that doesn't say "staying power" to you, I'm not sure what will.

It's perfect for spring.

The J.Crew x Barbour Barn jacket is made from Barbour's four-ounce waxed cotton, which is about one-third lighter than what's used on the brand's classic in-house styles. It's still a rain- and wind-repelling powerhouse, but it's not so heavy that you'll find yourself overheating when the weather warms up a bit. Spring is always tricky, but this jacket makes things a whole lot easier.

It'll just keep getting better.

Waxed cotton looks great from the jump, but that's not the best thing about it. The best thing about waxed cotton is how much better it looks after you put it through the wringer. Wear this jacket everywhere-for a hike, out to dinner, to the office, everywhere-and just watch how it evolves over time. The fabric will start to mold to your body. The finish will start to patina and develop some serious personality. Eventually, you'll have a jacket that's completely and utterly your own. And what's better than that?
