'Weather' you like it or not: Best rainy, snowy, tornadic movies to watch during a storm

The weather can really impact your mood.

And this rainy weather isn’t good for much. Instead of picking apples or checking out a high school football game, we’re stuck inside this weekend with rain, winds and dreary, miserable weather on tap.

But rainy weather gives you a chance to catch up on great movies. And since the weather outside is frightful, let’s stay on that theme and check up on movies that revolve around crazy weather events.

'Sharknado'

I’m afraid of tornadoes. I’m scared to death of sharks. Combine the two things together, and it’s not a storm I’d like to be caught in. And these sharks are truly the bad guys. If you get eaten in the water, that’s a home invasion gone bad. But when sharks eat you while they’re spinning around in a twister? That’s on them. They’re the bad guy. Available on AMC-Plus.

'Ice Age'

I don’t think I would cut it in the real ice age. I’m not down with being cold, and I hate wearing jackets. But if I had to be around an ice age, I would want it to be with these cartoon characters. Voiced by Ray Romano, John Leguizamo and Denis Leary, these guys get into high jinks during the brutal cold. Any show with a talking sloth is going to be worth watching. The original "Ice Age" and all of the spinoffs are available on Disney-Plus.

'Twister'

Any movie that features a cow caught in a tornado is one I’m going to watch. Truth be told, I didn’t watch this movie until about eight years ago (and I really didn’t want to watch it), but it turned out to be a very good movie. Helen Hunt was great, as was the greatest actor to ever star in any movie, Alan Ruck, who was spectacular as Cameron in "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off." Check it out on Max.

'Misery'

Is this cheating? Maybe. But if it wasn’t for that terrible storm, the great writer would never have had crashed his car, which caused him to end up in the crazy lady’s house. Kathy Bates is so creepy in this movie that it’s an all-timer. And with the exception of a few scenes, it’s not too gory. While not streaming this month, it will be available on AMC in October.

'Perfect Storm'

Imagine being on a ship during a massive storm that brings hurricane-strength winds and 100-foot waves. Just writing it scares me. And my wife loves it too, mostly because it stars George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg. And guys, John C. Reilly is in it, so at least if you don’t like it, you can recite "Step Brother" quotes. It’s streaming on Max.

'Volcano'

This movie slipped through the cracks for me until recently. It's about an emergency room in California dealing with earthquakes and erupting volcanoes. Starring Tommy Lee Jones, Anne Heche and Gabby Hoffmann, it's worth checking out if you missed it in the '90s. It’s streaming on Starz.

'The Fog'

We’re going back to 1980 for this movie starring Adrienne Barbeau, Hal Holbrock (who were both great together in "Creepshow") and Janet Leigh. The movie is described this way: “It tells the story of a strange, glowing fog that sweeps over a small coastal town in Northern California, bringing with it the vengeful ghosts of leprous mariners who were killed in a shipwreck there a century before.” It holds up pretty well, and is available on Streampix and Prime Video.

'Frozen'

Why are all weather movies either gruesome or for kids? After the hot summer we just battled through, maybe this isn’t as bad as it sounds, but the premise of the movie is a princess trying to save her kingdom from brutal cold. Don’t worry guys, global warming is coming for ya! The show and "Frozen 2" are available on Disney Plus.

'The Wizard of Oz'

Am I cheating with this? I don’t think so. No tornado means no movie! And this is one of the best movies ever. I liked it more when it was only one once a year (usually around Thanksgiving, if I remember correctly), but now everything is on demand. It might make it a little less special, but it’s still a classic. And I’m endorsing this movie despite the flying monkeys. Flying monkeys scare me, but it’s worth the scaring. It’s on Max if you want to watch it.

'The Mist'

It’s amazing that it took until 2007 for someone to make a movie like this. The movie, starring Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden and Laurie Holden, is about people shopping in a grocery store as a dense fog rolls in and then people outside start getting killed. It’s kind of like the beginning of “This is the End,” but scarier. If you have internet, you can watch it; it’s available on Pluto TV.

'The Shining'

What a creepy movie, and it’s among the best ever. The brutal winter was a little too much for poor Jack Nicholson, and he lost his mind while taking care of the snowbound hotel. It’s a great premise for a movie in that two vulnerable people are stuck with a psycho killer. Any movie that has that will be good. But this was pure genius. So pour yourself a shot of red rum to get into the mood and enjoy this. It’s streaming on AMC-Plus.
