We Say Goodbye to Spike TV as It Makes Way for the Paramount Network

News broke this week that Spike, the cable network for dudes that’s best remembered by its original name, Spike TV, is going away. In its place will be the Paramount Network. No word on what killed the brand, but maybe the world’s just a little bit too woke these days for the channel that once launched Stan Lee’s Stripperella.

Sometimes you gotta pour one out for your homies. So here are the Spike-iest moments from that channel that once played in the lobby of the dealership where you bought your Ford Fiesta.

In 2003, Spike planned to launch with a star-studded Playboy Mansion party. But because it was wrapped up in a lawsuit with director Spike Lee over the use of the name Spike, the initial broadcasts only referred to “the First Network for Men,” which is kind of a cagey way to kick off your channel. Spike came to be known for the Guys Choice awards, an awards series that finally gave dudes a chance to make their voices heard. And one of Spike’s longest-running series has been Fresh Baked Video Games, featuring the popular segment “A Free Video Game for a Shot to the Nuts.” In it, a contestant agrees to, well, exactly what the segment title suggests. (No word yet on the fate of Fresh Baked Video Games in the brave new world of Paramount Network.)

Spike, we’re gonna miss you. May you be happy in TV heaven, hopefully alongside that Dr. Pepper Ten commercial campaign that proudly proclaimed: “It’s not for women.”
