Way better than leftovers: Jonathan and Lizzie Tisch give hospital reason to be thankful

Here's the perfect story for the season of Thanksgiving.

The Tischses' $10 million gift to HSS, described as "extraordinary" by hospital CEO Dr. Bryan T. Kelly, will support expansion and construction of the Kellen Tower in New York City, the centerpiece of its main campus transformation.

The fifth floor of the new building will be named Tisch 5 in recognition of the couple's generosity. Tisch 5 will house 11 private rooms with special amenities and detailed finishes to bring the patient healing experience to the concierge level, the organization said.

“Lizzie and I are proud to help ensure that people who come to HSS for the best physicians in the world for orthopedics can experience the highest level of personalized care,” said Jonathan Tisch, who with Lizzie divides his time between Palm Beach and New York. “Every detail of Tisch 5 is being thoughtfully planned to give patients and families an optimal environment for recovery and an unparalleled experience."

In addition to clinical and physician practice spaces, the Kellen Tower will have 36 private inpatient rooms on three specialized floors.

The couple are stalwart benefactors to the hospital. With a $3 million gift made to the West Palm Beach satellite facility a few years ago, this latest gift brings their capital campaign commitment to $13 million.

“We are deeply grateful for Lizzie and Jonathan’s extraordinary generosity,” Kelly said. “Their commitment will help HSS set new standards of excellence in providing for the health and comfort of our patients and families.

Jonathan Tisch is a member of the HSS Board of Trustees and serves on the board’s Kellen Tower Task Force, providing leadership and oversight to the project. Together with other members of the Tisch family, they have supported the expansion of facilities for HSS sports medicine care and research.

As co-chairman of the board of the Loews Corp. and executive chairman of Loews Hotels & Co., Tisch said his expertise will be tapped in informing the design, material finishes, and aesthetic of the physical environment of Tisch 5.

The Tisches' philanthropy extends to education and the arts as well as health care. Beneficiaries include Jonathan's prep school alma mater The Frederick Gunn School, formerly known as The Gunnery; the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University, his alma mater; the Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch Apse at the University of Michigan Museum of Art; and The Shed, a $550 million cultural institution on Manhattan's West Side dedicated to commissioning, developing and presenting original works of art across all disciplines.
