20 years ago, Sean and Sara Watkins began their Watkins Family Hour shows at the LA nightclub Largo. Throughout the siblings’ careers in various music projects (including Nickel Creek and solo efforts), the Family Hour has remained a major part of their lives, and they are now gearing up to release the third studio album under the moniker, Vol. II.
One of the standout tracks is the Fiona Apple-assisted “(Remember Me) I’m the One Who Loves You,” which Consequence is exclusively premiering today. Created during a Family Hour tour in 2015, the refreshing tune is bursting with dynamic harmonies that reflect a long history of collaboration between Apple and the Watkins that began nearly two decades ago.
“The first time we met her was on stage at the old Largo in 2003, during one of Jon Brion’s now-legendary Friday night shows,” the duo tell Consequence. “He called out Patsy Cline’s ‘Walking After Midnight’ and Fiona sang the absolute hell out of it. She embodied it so completely and owned it in a way we’d never witnessed.”

An ode to the musicians who have inspired Sean and Sara during the Watkins Family Hour shows, Vol. II also includes features from Jon Brion, Jackson Browne, Madison Cunningham, Lucius, Gaby Moreno, and more. The album is out on August 19th via Family Hour Records. Pre-orders are ongoing.

EastWest Studio 3:

Like most of Vol. II, “(Remember Me) I’m the One Who Loves You” was recorded in EastWest Studio 3. A seven-piece band recording live in one room with a bunch of microphones can (and often does) become a bit sonically chaotic, but David Boucher, who engineered and co-produced the record with us, is a magician and made this song (and the whole record) sound as good coming out of the speakers, as it felt in the room.
There are so many iconic photos of Studio 3 at EastWest. Particularly from the sessions during the making of The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds record, which is a benchmark record for many of us. That little studio room has an undeniable feeling of musical gravity to it. You can feel it the moment you walk through the door and notice how the sound of your voice changes and becomes clean and present.
It’s a very special room that feels warm, but also commands respect and attention to detail. It’s a space where some incredible monumental music has been made, and we’re very grateful to have been able to record this song in that room.

We love singing old country songs with Fiona Apple. The first time we met her was on stage at the old Largo in 2003, during one of Jon Brion’s now legendary Friday night shows. Jon is always great at finding common musical territory between unlikely musicians. He called out Patsy Cline’s “Walking After Midnight” and Fiona sang the absolute hell out of it. She embodied it so completely and owned it in a way we’d never witnessed. We worked up “(Remember Me) I’m the One Who Loves You” with Fiona during a Family Hour tour in 2015, and were so pleased to get to revisit it for this record.

Since this album is celebrating 20 years of Watkins Family Hour, we wanted to represent all the various little eras equally. This song features some of the musicians we met in our early days at Largo — musicians who ended up playing a huge role in our musical development and with whom we got to make our first Watkins Family Hour album.
Sadly, last year Don Heffington, a cornerstone member of that band, passed on and we miss him dearly. On this record, our friend Griffin Goldsmith [of Dawes] joins us, who also loved Don and his drumming, as well as our good friend Gabe Witcher [of Punch Brothers] to allow for a much-desired twin fiddle moment. You get to hear Greg Leisz on pedal steel, [Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’] Benmont Tench on piano, Sebastian Steinberg [of Soul Coughing] on bass, and Fiona Apple with those sweet, sweet harms.
