In ‘The Water Man,’ David Oyelowo remixes 80s kids classics through a multicultural lens

David Oyelowo is making his directorial debut with the kid-friendly film, ‘The Water Man,’ which was inspired by 80s classics like The Goonies, Stand By Me, and E.T.

Oyelowo recently spoke with Yahoo Entertainment about making the leap behind the camera and how he added his spin on the genre film.

“When I was growing up watching these kinds of films, I loved them, but I never saw myself represented in them,” he said.

Oyelowo, who also acts in the film, added, “And so part of my intention is to have a world in which kids who look like mine can see themselves in the center of these kinds of narratives.”
