"Clickbait" Is A Hit On Netflix, So Here's 5 Things That Made No Sense And 4 Things That Were Great
So, I recently started taking some medication that makes me feel like garbage — which is a roundabout way of me saying that I canceled my plans last night and decided to watch Netflix's Clickbait in one continuous binge.
Not that one needs an excuse, of course.
Overall, I liked it! It hooked my attention well, which sounds like a low bar for television, except A) I have the attention span of a goldfish and B) The aforementioned feelings of garbage. It's the kind of cheesy, melodramatic thriller that would best not be thought about too deeply...
...Except I'm about to blatantly ignore my own advice, because I couldn't bloody stop thinking about the show all night. So, if you don't want a spoiler-filled, highly nitpicky take on the show from this moron, look away now!
Without further ado, please find the things I loved and the things I found utterly baffling about the show Clickbait:
🚨🚨🚨Spoilers about Clickbait ahead!!! 🚨🚨🚨
1.First, after finding out Emma was lying about meeting Nick IRL, the scenes where she's rehearsing what to say made me go "ohhhhhh" in hindsight.
After finding out that she's been lying, the bits where she's prepping what to say to Sophie go from "classic meeting your dead lover's wife nerves" to a clue that Emma isn't exactly telling the truth. Also, the parts where she says she was engaged. Poor gal just wants her pain to be taken seriously!
2.But I don't understand why the women "Nick" dated had photoshopped pictures with him.
If someone I was dating sent me photoshopped pictures with them, I would run for the fucking hills.
3.I think the moments where Matt interrupts the volleyball player talking to the reporter AND Sophie are clever.
You know, because you think he's protecting Nick — but he's actually just protecting himself. For what it's worth, I'd also like to state that no way in fresh hell could I ever break the law and then tell my editor that I can't reveal my sources.
4.However, I cannot understand why Nick wouldn't have reported Matt.
Look, if someone tells you that they don't want to press charges against their abuser, that's their decision to make. However, in this case, Nick found out that his coworker had not only probably broken university rules, but also broken the freakin' law. Knowing that your coworker abuses his power with young women in his proximity and then doing...nothing? Apart from yelling at the girl in question? Eugh.
5.It more or less makes sense for Dawn and her husband to be behind Emma being run off the road, because she sees her at the university.
One of the things I like about the Dawn twist is that she's just ~there~ a lot of the time but no one suspects her, which reflects her reasons for catfishing in the first place. Also, Dawn knows how to use a voice changer — which either her or her husband could have used for the threatening call.
6.However, I don't get how Dawn would have known about Nick and Pia's father.
Emma knows that something traumatic happened when Nick and Pia were kids, which means that Dawn must have known. I get that coworkers can be close, but why wouldn't Nick use the heart attack line with Dawn — if he said anything about his dad at all?
7.Dawn saying "I can't stop crying" to Sophie feels haunting.
Emotional coworker or ACCOMPLICE TO MURDER?
8.But I don't get why Simon's buddy was so down to commit a crime.
Like, other than being weird, high, and a good (?) friend.
9.And finally, I don't get why Nick wouldn't go straight home!
I KNOW that they explain this in the show as a consequence of Nick's anger, but they also simultaneously emphasize how much Nick loves his family — wouldn't he have gone straight to them? That being said, I do like how this ending reinforces the "no one sees Dawn as significant/a threat" theme — plus, more twists!
I'd also just like to include some honorable mentions of unanswered questions I have.
Do Ethan and Alison end up dating? Do Roshan and Pia get it on? Does Sophie stay at the same school? Why is Roshan so hot?
