A Thibodaux man will appear on "Wheel of Fortune" Wednesday evening.

Derwin Everett, 36, a native of Schriever, said competing on the ABC game show had been a childhood dream. He and his siblings grew up watching the show, trying to guess the answers to the puzzles along with the TV contestants.

Viewers can find out how he fares when the show airs at 6:30 p.m. on Fox 8 of New Orleans.

In an interview Monday, Everett said he wouldn't spoil the ending.

"I was in control of my own destiny with no external source. … I was one man on the island all alone," Everett about answering the word puzzles.

Spinning the wheel was different, relying solely on luck.

"It's like the craps table at the casino," Everett said. "I do have the dice in my hand. It can work out in my fortune, but also I can crap out."

Everett, an industrial electrician, is currently working in New Mexico at an Intel plant and plans to return home to Thibodaux just before Christmas.

He sent an audition tape to "Wheel of Fortune" in November 2021 and didn't think he'd hear anything more from it. In March or April, he heard back and found out he was flying to California. The show was recorded in September.

"It was surreal; I'm still trying to process it, like 'Damn, did that really happen?' " he said. "I've grown up with Pat Sajak, I've grown up with Vanna White, it was surreal to really see them in the same room with me."

Everett's older sister, Trinicia Everett, said she is excited to watch the episode. She said Derwin has always been incredibly bright, and he'll always be her brainy brother.

"He never stopped being Derwin the geek, Derwin the smart guy," she said. "My little brother made it to a national game show and performed on the national stage."
