For game show contestants, there’s a lot going on when episodes are taped. There’s cameras, lights and a studio audience. Things seem much different than when you watch the show on TV. It’s a big adjustment. Sometimes, all those distractions lead players to make guesses they would normally never consider. On Thursday’s “Wheel of Fortune,” we saw this happen to a contestant named Tavaris, when things took a hilarious turn down an unexpected road.

Things took a turn with players trying to guess a puzzle in the category “Phrase.” With five letters and an exclamation point showing, Tavaris buzzed in with his answer: “Right in the butt!” This was obviously not correct.

The guess caught host Pat Sajak and the other contestants off guard, with one exclaiming, “What!?” as Sajak responded, “No” and the studio audience gasped.

Pat Sajak is set to exit the long-running game show at the end of this season, with his final episode airing June 7. Apparently, Tavaris decided to send him out with a bang.

Here’s the thing: The category “Phrase” usually teases a well-known phrase that people regularly use. I’m not judging Tavaris, however, for most of us “Right in the butt” is not a commonly used phrase. Also, the first word in the puzzle clearly has four letters and “Right” does not.

After one of the other players gave the correct answer, which was “This is the best,” the host had to know what poor Tavaris was thinking.

“I apologize, Pat. I was a little excited,” he confessed. Having seen it all at this point, Sajak politely replied, “We’ll figure out a way to handle that tastefully. I have no idea what that’ll be, but…”

This is not the worst “Wheel of Fortune” mishap we’ve seen, but it’s been a while since we’ve had a really funny one, so sorry Tavaris, this one’s definitely going viral.
