What to watch this weekend September 15, 2023: TV awards contenders

We’re halfway through September, which means the most entertaining show on TV is back: Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show.”

The Emmy-winning drama starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon returned this week for its 10-episode third season, which picks up two years after the events of the Season 2 finale. Naturally, this means big changes are happening, not just at the fictional network within the show, which is struggling after launching a streaming service right as the pandemic hit the U.S. (the series loves its “ripped-from-the-headlines” approach to storytelling), but for the actual show as well. Emmy winner Jon Hamm joins the cast as tech billionaire Paul Marks, who takes an interest in UBA (and perhaps a little bit more), while Nicole Beharie portrays new “Morning Show” anchor Chris Hunter. The first two episodes are currently streaming on Apple TV+, and with so much drama already beginning to unfold, it’s the awards contender to watch this weekend.

Once you’ve revisited the highs and lows of March 2022, however, other contenders to watch include: 

  • “Heels”: Starz’s wrestling-themed family drama wraps up its emotionally charged second season this week with Harmageddon, the final cross-promotion between Jack Spade’s (Stephen Amell) Duffy Wrestling League — of which Crystal Tyler (Kelli Berglund) has become the main draw — and Charlie Gully’s (Mike O’Malley) flashy Florida Wrestling Dystopia. Everything is on the line, including a possible streaming deal, which makes for an exciting and eventful finish to the season. The finale is now streaming on Starz. 

  • “Welcome to Wrexham”: As one sports-themed show wraps, another takes its place. FX’s fan-favorite docuseries, which is nominated for Best Unstructured Reality Series at this year’s Emmys, is back for round two and continues to follow two Hollywood actors (Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds) as they attempt to lead one of the world’s oldest soccer teams (sorry, football clubs) to glory. The Season 2 premiere is now streaming on Hulu.

  • “The Other Black Girl”: Based on Zakiya Dalila Harris’ best-selling novel and set within the world of book publishing, Hulu’s new series from Onyx Collective blends genres as it follows Nella (Sinclair Daniel), an editorial assistant who’s excited to find her company has finally hired another Black woman (Ashleigh Murray). But things take a turn as friendship evolves into natural competition, prompting Nella to suspect something deeper and darker is going on, sending the show down a creepy and campy corridor. It’s a big swing, but the show’s strength lies in what it has to say about being Black in a white world. All 10 episodes are now streaming on Hulu.
