What to watch this weekend September 1, 2023: Movie awards contenders

The Venice and Telluride film festivals are kicking off Oscar season this week, which means the good stuff is finally on its way. Unfortunately, the streaming offerings over Labor Day weekend aren’t particularly robust. But there are a few titles worth checking out as summer fades away. 

The contender to watch this week: “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”

The first three “Indiana Jones” movies earned a collective 13 Oscar nominations, and while the franchise’s long-gestating final installment saw lukewarm reception, it could still be a below-the-line contender — especially with fall blockbusters like “Dune: Part Two” being delayed to 2024. Anytime John Williams‘ name appears in the credits, there are awards chances in the offing. Catch Harrison Ford‘s Indy swan song on VOD. It’ll stream on Disney+ later this year. 

Other contenders to watch:

  • “Perpetrator”: After premiering at the Berlin International Film Festival in February, “Knives and Skin” director Jennifer Reeder‘s newest horror feature opens in select theaters and debuts on Shudder today. The coming-of-age fable about a foolhardy 18-year-old (Kiah McKirnan from “Night Sky” and “Mare of Easttown”) sent to live with her aunt (Alicia Silverstone) involves a family spell gone awry. 

  • “Madeleine Collins”: “Benedetta” breakout Virginie Efira has headlined three French films this year. The latest is this Hitchockcian drama about a translator who flits between two lives: one with her boyfriend in Switzerland, and another with her husband in France. She’s good at the whole duplicity thing, until her curious situation starts to unravel. Rent “Madeleine Collins” on VOD. 

  • “Hypnotic”: The Ben Affleck movie likeliest to scrounge up Oscar buzz this year is “Air,” but his other spring release is now streaming on Peacock. It’s directed by Robert Rodriguez, who co-wrote this thriller about a Texas police officer who encounters a covert government program that might lead him to his missing daughter. 

  • Streaming dump: It’s the start of a new month, so you know what that means: lots of old Oscar nominees added to streaming libraries. You’ll find “Erin Brockovich” and “Get Out” on Peacock.” On Max, there’s “Boyz n the Hood,” “Carrie,” and “The Exorcist.” Netflix has “Fences,” The Deer Hunter,” and “Up in the Air.” Hulu has “An Education,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” and “The Last King of Scotland.” And if you’ve never seen “Arrival,” now is your time: It’s available on Netflix, Max, and Pluto TV.
