Mike Flanagan’s creative partnership with Netflix has produced several memorable pieces of art over the last several years. His latest project for the streaming service, the gothic horror series “The Fall of the House of Usher,” is yet another that will have viewers talking.

The eight-episode drama skillfully blends the work and imagery of Edgar Allen Poe with a timely narrative about the Usher family, a privileged group who own a pharmaceutical company that is largely responsible for the current opioid crisis. Bruce Greenwood leads the cast as Roderick Usher, the patriarch who must confront his past in the wake of the violent deaths of all of his children. Joining Greenwood are several actors who’ve starred in Flanagan’s previous Netflix series, including Carla Gugino, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, Henry Thomas and Zach Gilford, and new additions like Mary McDonnell and Mark Hamill, who turn in fantastic performances in the gripping tale. As Halloween draws near, “The Fall of the House of Usher” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

Of course, if horror isn’t your jam, other contenders to watch include:

  • “Lessons in Chemistry”: Oscar winner Brie Larson stars in this adaptation of Bonnie Garmus’ book of the same name that examines the sexist and patriarchal world of the 1950s through the story of Elizabeth Zott, a brilliant but often overlooked chemist who, after being fired from her lab, becomes the host of a popular TV cooking show. The first two episodes are now streaming on Apple TV+.

  • “Frasier”: Four-time Best Comedy Actor winner Kelsey Grammer is back as Dr. Frasier Crane in this Paramount+ revival that sees the snooty yet lovable psychiatrist return to Boston to reconnect with his adult son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott) in the wake of his father’s death. Although most of the original “Frasier” cast does not appear, Grammer does not miss a beat, which makes a lot of sense when you consider he’s been playing the character since… well, let’s just say it’s been a very long time. The first two episodes are now streaming on Paramount+.

  • “Archer”: Amid these new beginnings is a rather sad goodbye. After 14 seasons, super spy Sterling Archer (H. Jon Benjamin) and his narcissistic colleagues (and Cheryl, who technically isn’t a coworker because she never fills out her start paperwork correctly) are hanging it all up. In the Emmy-winning animated show’s swan song, “Breaking Fabian,” the gang must thwart an army of technologically advanced drones that has been sent to kill all former employees of IIA. It’s an outing that highlights what everyone does best, and yet it’s hard to believe this is the gang’s last mission. The episode is now streaming on Hulu.
