If you’re of a certain age (or if you’ve ever spent too much time on Wikipedia), you likely know of the horrors that are about to befall the British royal family on Netflix’s “The Crown.” The sixth and final season of the Emmy-winning drama from Peter Morgan is back this week and covers the events of 1997 through 2005. The time-hopping first four episodes, which are streaming now on Netflix (the final six episodes will stream in December), depict the lead-up to Diana’s (Elizabeth Debicki) tragic death in a car crash in Paris and the subsequent reaction of her family, Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) and the monarchy. Debicki, who was nominated for an Emmy for her performance in Season 5, gives yet another award-worthy turn as the show follows Diana in the months leading up to that fateful day, making “The Crown” the awards contender to watch this weekend.

However, if you’ve already seen “The Queen” or you’re bored by the monarchy, other contenders to watch include:

  • “Julia”: One of 2022’s best and most comforting series is back for seconds. Sarah Lancashire, who earlier this year wrapped up her run as a no-nonsense police sergeant on the British crime drama “Happy Valley,” returns as chef and TV personality Julia Child in this Max original (talk about range!). After a successful freshman run of her pioneering cooking show “The French Chef” in Season 1, Julia, along with her husband Paul (David Hyde Pierce), finds herself in France at the beginning of Season 2, working on a new cookbook with Simca (Isabella Rossellini). The first three episodes of Season 2 are now streaming on Max.

  • “A Murder at the End of the World”: For those still smarting over the cancellation of “The OA,” Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij have reunited for a new FX series that might sound like the plot of “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” but almost certainly doesn’t involve anyone destroying the Mona Lisa. When several strangers are invited to a reclusive billionaire’s (Clive Owen) remote retreat in this seven-episode series, one of the guests inevitably turns up dead, and it’s up to an amateur sleuth portrayed by Emmy nominee Emma Corrin to prove it was murder. The first two episodes are now streaming on Hulu.

  • “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off”: Through what I can only suspect is some form of wizardry, the entire cast of 2010’s “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” has returned for this new Netflix series, which is also based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s beloved graphic novels. The eight-episode anime reimagines the story of Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) having to defeat the seven evil exes of his new girlfriend, Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). To say more would give away too much, as the enchanting show is best enjoyed with little knowledge going in. All eight episodes are now streaming on Netflix.
