What to watch this weekend March 8, 2024: TV awards contenders

Hollywood’s biggest night is upon us at last. The 96th Academy Awards air Sunday at 7/6c on ABC, which is good news for “Oppenheimer” leading man Cillian Murphy, who on Monday will be able to return home to Ireland and not leave its shores for six months. The ceremony will again be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, and many former winners, including Jessica Lange, Matthew McConaughey and Rita Moreno, will be on hand to help hand out this year’s awards. The evening will also include what is probably going to go down as one of the weirdest musical numbers to be featured on the Oscar stage, as someone was able to talk three-time nominee Ryan Gosling into performing the memorable hit song “I’m Just Ken” from Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.” So although there haven’t been too many surprises this awards season, meaning Sunday’s telecast might be one of the most predictable we’ve seen in recent years, the Oscars themselves — eligible at the Emmys later this year — are still the awards contender to watch this weekend.

More from GoldDerby

Of course, other contenders still exist, including:

  • “Tokyo Vice”: Tensions are running high as Max’s thrilling crime drama enters the second half of its sophomore season. This week’s episode, “I Choose You,” picks up in the aftermath of the shocking shootout that endangered the life of Chihara-kai leader Ishida (Shun Sugata) last week. With Samantha’s (Rachel Keller) help, Jake (Ansel Elgort) and Katagiri (Ken Watanabe) investigate whether Tozawa (Ayumi Tanida) was responsible for the attack, but despite their best efforts, Samantha soon finds herself — and her connection to the Chihara-kai — thrust into the spotlight. The episode is now streaming on Max.

  • “So You Think You Can Dance”: The 17-time Emmy-winning reality competition series made its triumphant return this week after nearly two years off the air. Changes include a new documentary-style format that gives fans a look at the dancers’ day-to-day lives, and a couple new judges, including “Dancing with the Stars” alum Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Emmy nominee Allison Holker. The season premiere is now streaming on Hulu.

  • “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”: The penultimate episode or Ryan Murphy’s latest project is a big one. In “Beautiful Babe,” Naomi WattsBabe Paley, one of the titular swans who was betrayed by friend and confidant Truman Capote (Tom Hollander), learns she only has six months to live. But Babe’s fate isn’t the only one decided in the hour, which makes us wonder what next week’s finale has in store. The episode is now streaming on Hulu.
