What to watch this weekend March 15, 2024: TV awards contenders

You think you know… but you have no idea. That might be the memorable tagline of MTV’s 2000s-era docuseries “Diary,” but it applies to Apple TV+’s newest program, too.

The seven-episode ”Manhunt” tells the incredible story of the search for John Wilkes Booth (portrayed by Irish actor Anthony Boyle) in the aftermath of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln (Hamish Linklater). The limited series, of which the first two episodes are now streaming, is adapted from James L. Swanson’s book “Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer,” and while it’s a historical drama, it’s anything but dry. Described by Apple as a conspiracy thriller about one of America’s best known but least understood crimes, the show also has a perfectly deployed sense of humor, making it more than meets the eye.

Emmy Award winner Tobias Menzies anchors the series as Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, who led the hunt for Booth, while Matt Walsh, Patton Oswalt, Lovie Simone, Betty Gabriel, Lili Taylor, Brandon Flynn and Will Harrison round out the cast. Filled with excellent performances and offering insight into one of the most tumultuous periods of our country’s short history, “Manhunt” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

However, if your interests lie elsewhere, other contenders include:

  • “Masters of the Air”: You don’t want to miss the epic conclusion to Apple TV+’s war drama, which is now streaming on the platform. The emotional 78-minute finale followsCallum Turner‘s John Egan and Austin Butler’s Gale Cleven as they attempt to escape the increasingly harsh conditions they face as prisoners of war now that the tide of the war has changed. It’s a powerful end to not just the series, but to Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ well-regarded World War II trilogy as well. (And in case you forgot, Anthony Boyle also stars in this show as navigator Harry Crosby.)

  • “The Amazing Race”: The new season of CBS’ globe-trotting, Emmy-winning reality series was actually filmed in 2022, but other than the COVID restrictions, you likely won’t be able to tell. Season 36 kicks off in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and includes a former NFL player, a pair of Air Force pilots and a couple of firefighters, among others. The season premiere is now streaming on Paramount+.

  • Grey’s Anatomy”: Very few shows in TV history have enjoyed the longevity that ABC’s Emmy-winning medical drama has. The soap debuted as a midseason replacement in the spring of 2004. Now, 20 years later, the show is back for a strike-shortened Season 20. StarEllen Pompeo is back and scrubbing in for at least four episodes after Meredith moved to Boston, while Jessica Capshaw is also slated to return after exiting the series in 2018. The season premiere is now streaming on Hulu.
