A Christmas Carol

HOW/WHEN & WHERE TO WATCH: 7:30 p.m. on FX

Movie Debut
A Christmas Carol has become something of a quaint holiday tradition, a family-friendly tale of redemption trotted out by everyone from your local community theater to the Muppets. But at its heart, it was always a ghost story, a tale of fire and brimstone that forces a man to examine his own past, present, and future to have a prayer at salvation. This new production from FX, starring Guy Pearce, leans fully into the attendant darkness there and then some, replacing all signs of holiday cheer with Dickensian grimness. Tune if you prefer your holidays on the darker side. —Maureen Lee Lenker
