There’s no such thing is as Ancestry.com for robots, which is unfortunate for the titular droid from Neil Blomkamp’s latest sci-fi flick, Chappie. If we were to guess, though, we’d say he comes from the same family tree as Short Circuit's Johnny 5 and WALL-E.
We trace his lineage even further back in our new video, The Evolution of Movie Robots, which starts at the very beginning – that would be around the introduction of The Automaton in 1919’s The Master Mystery – and looks at how ‘bots have changed in the nearly 100 years since their screen debut.
As you’ll see, for all the advances in their technology and design, one thing’s remained constant: They’ve always been ahead of their time.
Chappie opens Friday.
