The most recent "American Idol" training session with pop star Meghan Trainor proved to be a bit difficult for Nashville's Emmy Russell who struggled with remembering lyrics and melodies to her song choice for the evening, "Lose You To Love Me" by Selena Gomez.

She pulled it together, however, for the live show which aired Monday night.

Judges were complimentary of her performance, which earned her a spot in the show's top 10. Only two contestants were eliminated from the top 12 which was chosen Sunday night. According to show host Ryan Seacrest, some 20 million votes determined the top 10 contestants.

After Russell's performance, judge Luke Bryan told Russell that she was able to "come through and still shine." He added that she needed to remember to love singing and "have fun with it."

Judge Lionel Richie told Russell she "did a great job," and Katy Perry said she loved Russell's rendition of the song adding "It was like Kacey Musgraves doing Selena Gomez. I think that was one of the best vocal performances you've given us."

Surviving Sunday night's elimination

On Sunday night's show, Russell sang "I Can't Make You Love Me," a song made popular by Bonnie Raitt, which earned her a spot in the show's top 12.

While her performance was solid, she seemed to fumble a bit at the end of the song, smiling and fiddling with her earpiece as the song came to a close. To America, the stumble didn't matter, though because they voted her through to the next round.

"American Idol" will air again on Sunday, April 28 and Monday, April 29 on ABC at 7 p.m. and will stream on Hulu the day after.
