Watch Peter Jackson and Adam Savage Geek Out Over 'Hal 9000' Faceplate from '2001: A Space Odyssey'

Peter Jackson isn’t just one of the world’s foremost filmmakers — he’s also a passionate collector of movie memorabilia. In a new episode of Adam Savage’s Tested, the Lord Of the Rings auteur provides a tour of his mind-boggling collection (watch the clip above, via Collider), which includes amazing items from 2001: A Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Jurassic Park, and more.

Jackson’s movie-treasure-filled man cave is brimming with rare and fantastic props, costumes, and artifacts sure to make cinephiles drool. Of particular interest to Savage is the Hal 9000 faceplate (from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001), complete with a photo-lens that — with a little help of a flashlight — makes the computer’s glowing red eye come to eerie life. Savage also examines a host of other items acquired by Jackson, who explains that, while he has no collecting “rules,” he tends to focus on movies and TV shows that made an enormous impact on him as a kid, and thus helped inspire him to become a filmmaker himself.

From plaster face molds from Planet of the Apes to a random panda, Savage’s tour confirms the depth of the director’s love for the movies; Jackson’s next personal contribution to film history is slated to be an adaptation of Philip Reeve’s novel Mortal Engines, which he’s co-writing and producing, with longtime collaborator Christian Rivers making his feature-film debut as director.
