Even after being named interim head coach at Ole Miss under the tumultuous circumstances of Hugh Freeze’s exit, Matt Luke was not shy about saying it was his dream job.

Rebels athletic director Ross Bjork really sold it, too. He went on for a few minutes describing what he was looking for in a new coach, making it seem like he had made a new hire. When he announced to the team that Luke, who led the Rebels to a 6-6 record capped off by an Egg Bowl win over rival Mississippi State, was staying on in a full-time role, the room erupted.

Luke is an Ole Miss letterman and was an assistant under Freeze, Tommy Tuberville, David Cutcliffe and Ed Orgeron. His brother and father also played for the Rebels. He knows the program through and through.

To him, the Ole Miss job isn’t a stepping stone.

“This is somewhere I want to be, and I love, and will be here until they run me out of here.”
