What to watch November 17, 2023: Movie awards contenders

For the third week in a row, a new awards contender is premiering on Netflix. Like “Nyad” and “The Killer,” whether the streaming debut du jour can make a big dent in the Oscar race is unclear. Fortunately, the SAG strike is over, which means all of these films’ lead stars can hit the trail to give them much-needed promotional boosts.

Colman Domingo stands a good chance of collecting his first Oscar nomination thanks to George C. Wolfe‘s biopic about Bayard Rustin, an associate of Martin Luther King Jr. who played a key role in the civil rights movement. Rustin never got the limelight the way some of the era’s other organizers did, partly because he was openly gay. Domingo is excellent in the film, showcasing an erudite wit that’s at once grave and humorous. He’s joined by an A-list cast including Chris Rock, Jeffrey Wright, Audra McDonald, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and his “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” co-star Glynn Turman. Lenny Kravitz also wrote a Best Original Song contender. “Rustin” is streaming on Netflix. 

Other contenders:

  • “The Creator“: Gareth Edwards‘ futuristic sci-fi drama opened without much box-office fanfare in late September, but it’s since become a modest sleeper hit with $104 million in worldwide grosses. John David Washington plays an undercover operative fighting a war against artificial intelligence. If it can gain more momentum, the movie’s handsome craftwork could show up in below-the-line Oscar fields. Check out “The Creator” on VOD. 

  • “The Stones and Brian Jones”: On the heels of The Rolling Stones’ new album comes a documentary about original band member Brian Jones, who played guitar and other instruments on some of the Stones’ most famous hits. He was kicked out of the group in 1969 and died one month later. Nick Broomfield, the documentarian who previously chronicled the lives of Kurt Cobain and Whitney Houston, has made a film about Jones’ rise and fall that is now available on VOD. 

  • “Mutt”: This underrated Sundance prizewinner follows a day in the life of Feña (Lío Mehiel), a transgender man in his 20s who reunites with various loved ones while traversing New York. It had a limited release in August and is now streaming on Netflix. 

  • “David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived”: It’s not an Oscar qualifier, but it is a sweet documentary that’s streaming on Max. “The Boy Who Lived” profiles Daniel Radcliffe‘s friendship with a “Harry Potter” stunt double who broke his neck on set and suffered a permanent spinal injury.
