Watch Norbert Leo Butz sing Dreamgirls from MCC's Miscast

MCC Theater’s annual Miscast Gala came and MCC Theater’s annual Miscast Gala went, but at least one participant voiced his dramatic concern about being asked to leave.

Theater fans geek out yearly for the Off Broadway company’s annual gala show which features New York stage all-stars bending age, gender, race, and everything else to perform songs and roles no self-respecting producer would ever allow them to do on a stage Tuesday through Sunday.

Case in point: Norbert Leo Butz as Effie White.

The two-time Tony winner (for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Catch Me If You Can) played the Dreamgirls diva in the evening’s penultimate performance, drafting fellow singers Brandon Victor Dixon and Brian d’Arcy James as the other Dreams alongside Stephanie J. Block, Kelli O’Hara, Jordan Fisher, and Jenn Colella. (Meanwhile, original Effie Jennifer Holliday was onstage the whole time, and her reactions are a bonus delight.)

EW has an exclusive look at “It’s All Over/And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” which is fairly apt considering the whole situation is in fact over and will quite literally never happen again.

Other songs from this year’s Miscast, which you’ll likely see imminently on YouTube, include Carmen Cusack’s “You’ll Be Back,” Mandy Gonzalez’s “Waving Through a Window,” and Holliday’s finale, “I Am What I Am” from La Cage.
