Fresh off the release of her latest album Queen, Nicki Minaj is sitting down with journalist Elliott Wilson for the latest installment of his long-running “CRWN” interview series. Watch the live stream below.
Nicki discussed how she wants to change the verses from “Chun Swae.” “Am I gonna get your blessings, y’all, to update the verses on ‘Chun Swae,’” she asked the crowd, who screamed in approval. She also opened up about “Sorry.” She said they were told that Tracy Chapman doesn’t clear stuff like that and seemingly, they were unable to reach her. “We didn’t know Tracy Chapman wrote that song because that’s a vintage dancehall song,” she said. She said the song came together while Nas was working on Nasir.
The conversation turned to her feud with Remy Ma (“I didn't engage in a rap beef,” Nicki said), and later, Wilson asked about the status of her relationship with Cardi B. After saying they had a nice conversation at the Met Gala this year, Nicki says she doesn’t hold grudges. Then, after saying there’s “always some shit being said,” she added, “If a person keeps on offending you, you might have to address it at some point. If that time comes, I'm prepared.”
At one point, Nicki talked about the music industry’s current trends. “Labels do not care about talent anymore,” she said. “It’s about popularity.” When Wilson mentioned that her collaboration with 6ix9ine could be viewed as a grab for popularity, she responded that she chose to work with him because she appreciates his talent. “The reason [‘FEFE’] drew my interest was not because 6ix9ine was popular, it’s because it reminded me of ‘Slumber Party’ by Gucci Mane.” She did not address 6ix9ine’s recent legal trouble. (The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office recommended that 6ix9ine be sentenced to 1-3 years in state prison over crimes committed after he pleaded guilty to the use of a child in a sexual performance. Prosecutors want to require Hernandez to register as a sex offender.)
Queen, Minaj’s fourth studio album, features Lil Wayne, Eminem, Ariana Grande, Future, the Weeknd, and more. It was released on August 10 after several release date changes. Last night she made an appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” where she made the host blush by rhyming about him in the style of “Barbie Dreams.”
